[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this shot on my recent trip to Japan. During the two weeks in Japan I took about 3,500 shots.

This very young macaque looked freezing. His mother is behind him so he could run to her for warmth, even so it was an especially cold day and snowing.

This picture was taken close to sunset, in overcast conditions in a forest at the bottom of a valley - so even though there was a lot of snow to throw back light, exposure was, at time, difficult.

Hi James,

Wowwww. What a lovely monkey. I liked its sight and the ears resembling that of bats:) Wonderflul capture and nice composition my friend! TFS for this lovely capture once more.

Hallo James
I really cannot say anything else except "Ag Shame- Hoe Fraai!"
Unbelievable beautiful and so innocently looking. That facial expression counts for a few smileys. This one has a high cuteness factor for me. I think it must be wonderful to have this kind of photographic opportunities. I really don't know how Iíll react when something this beautiful comes my way to photograph. Everything of this image is just great, and I cannot find any fault. Thank you very much for sharing. It was most enjoyable.
Kind regards

This lovable blighter looks cold alright but not much concerned about it, James. Maybe because of mama just behind it.
Very fine capture under poor light and inclement weather.
TFS and regards.

Hi James,
This young macaque is very cute. The eye contact is wonderful. Your pov and composition are great. Very well done and tfs.

Looks like a little devil with those pointed ears :-)
Very nice eye-contact and a great POV.
I love the pose as well.
Perfect exposure against the snow.
Nice work James.

Very nice shot. Although he is freezing, but somehow i think he is not alone. Companion is just around the left corner. Great POV.

The poor little thing does look cold - but so cute with the snow on him. An amazing shot of this monkey in a wonderful pose. The face is fantastic with wonderful eyes, wrinkles and expression. Beautiful colors and superb details.

Awesome shot of this young Snow Monkey James, complete with the cold looking expression. Great colour, I can see how the exposure would be tough, there's a little bit of clipping on the highlights area, but I think you did very well to keep in what you did, in fact the extra light might enhance the feeling. The pose is excellent, complete with flakes of snow on the monkey, and just enough of his mother so we get a full understanding of the shot.

Thanks, John

I really love these....the first was the best but each has something to lend..it would make a super compositional article for a smaller magazine...truly..I think I remember mentioning National Geographic on the first one..and of course they run more than one shot..Very nice addition James...I love the way you are putting so much of your heart and thought into these of late!

I would say that tenderness is best shown in this baby monkey. James, this is a fantastic shot and when I opened it, I told myself you must have taken hundreds and hundreds of pictures... and I read you did! I just couldn't stop shooting either, it is fantastic. This is a great privilege you have to travel like you do and take pictures and witness all those forms of life and geology and everything you see. Plus, it is also great and generous that you share it with us. This lovely baby with snow on its hands and this old-young little face with the eyes looking at the lens... a sort of sad look in its eyes... the light in it. And the ears are sharpened! Thank you!

3500!!!!!!! I suspect you have some sophisticated system for organizing all those photos! What size of CF cards do you use? I got one of those Epson storage devices and it works great while on a trip.

Your little monkey does indeed look pretty cold. You just want to pick him up. The focus on the face with the bits of snow is really super.

Hi James,
Outstanding shot of this baby Macaque in freezing cold but playful. Stunning eye contact and the expression on its face is just 'WOW'. Fantastic lighting and exposure control and I like the sprinkling of snow over its body. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello James,
Another beauty from Japan! Gorgeous portrait of the baby. The shallow DOF and spot on exposure and most of all the expression captured makes it a great shot. TFS
