Oriental Magpie Robin
(Copsychus saularis) 鹊鸲
Size: 23 cm

Large; bill black; legs grey. Male has a black head, breast and upper-parts; under-parts white; tail black with white outer feathers; bold white wing-bars. Female has a back upper-parts and breast replaced by dull dark grey. Juvenile has a mottled brown breast.

Described as a melodious song; a mournful rising whistle; and harsh raspy alarm note.

Their populations were nearly wiped out in Singapore but they have made a slow comeback through reintroduction efforts, although their status remains vulnerable. This adaptable species has invaded cultivated areas and villages from its original habitat of forest edges and mangroves. It like to sings from a branch or on a rooftop in the morning. Itís finds most of its food on the ground. Its flimsy nest is built low in a bush.

Uncommon resident breeder on the main island, uncommon resident in offshore islands.
