Fantail on Etlingera Elatior branch taken with a monopod.

Fantails are small insectivorous birds of southern Asia and Australasia belonging to the genus Rhipidura in the family Rhipiduridae. Most of the species are about 15 to 18 cm long, specialist aerial feeders, and named as "fantails", but the Australian Willie Wagtail, is a little larger, and though still an expert hunter of insects on the wing, concentrates equally on terrestrial prey.

The true wagtails are part of the genus Motacilla in the family Motacillidae and are not close relatives of the fantails.

The fantails are small bodied (11.5-21 cm long) birds with long tails; in some species the tail is longer than the body and in most the tail is longer than the wing.[1] When the tail is folded it is rounded at the end, but when spread in display or aerial foraging it has a characteristic fan shape that gives the family its name.

Fantails adopt a hunched horizontal posture most of the time, with the wings drooped and held away from the body and the tail half cocked. There are some exceptions to this, particularly the Northern Fantail of New Guinea and the Cockerell's Fantail of the Solomon Islands, which have a more upright posture reminiscent of the monarch flycatchers.

Etlingera elatior (Torch Ginger, Ginger Flower, Red Ginger Lily, Torch Lily, Wild Ginger, Combrang, Bunga Siantan, Philippine Wax Flower, Xiang Bao Jiaing, Indonesian Tall Ginger, Boca de Dragón, Rose de Porcelaine, Porcelain Rose) is a species of herbaceous perennial plant. Botanical synonyms include Nicolaia elatior, Nicolaia speciosa, Phaeomeria speciosa, Alpinia elatior, Alpinia magnifica. The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements while the flower buds are an important ingredient in the Nonya dish laksa. In North Sumatra, the flower buds are used for a dish called arsik ikan mas (Andaliman Peppercorn Spiced Carps)

It is known in Indonesian as bunga kecombrang or honje, Malay as bunga kantan and Thai as kaalaa.

In Karo, it is known as asam cekala (asam meaning 'sour'), and the flower buds, but more importantly the ripe seed pods, which are packed with small black seeds, are an essential ingredient of the Karo version of sayur asam, and are particularly suited to cooking fresh fish.

Fantastic shot, excellent composition and point of view, superb sharpness and good depth of field, beautiful colors and nice contrast.
Best regards Siggi

Hello Foozi,

How fortunate to be able to get such a delightfully private shot of the bird on its nest.
I love the details of its spread tail feathers, the light reflection in its eye and the good details of the nest construction.
The twig makes a fine diagonal composition.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Great shot Foozi... love the composition/POV. Very interesting bird and notes. TFS

Hello Foozi,
The photo is very good, but ... Sorry, I don't like photos of nesting birds. I've seen too much disturbance only to take a photo.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Foozi,

A fantastic shot!! How wonderful to be able to get a picture of this Fantail on his nest without disturbing him. An excellent view of both the bird and nest. Very good colors, details and textures. I have never seen one of these birds but I can tell how they got their name.

Jane

Hello Foozi, beautiful picture of this small little bird in a nice pose. Very sharp focus on the birds eye. The body colors and the features are clearly visible. Nice POV and composition of this picture. Beautiful background colors making good contrast with the subject.

Hello Foozi

lovely colors, very well done
Jacqueline

Hi Foozi,
You were lucky to find this Fantail on a nest.
We have them in New Zealand too,but they move so fast that its very hard to capture them.
This one seems much darker than most of ours, although we do see a black one sometimes.
Great work.
Cheers
Steve

Salam Foozi,

Perfectly composed robin nesting quietly on the diagonal branch. The pleasing green background is just brilliantly silenced with the nest draping nicely down the frame.

Top class work and TFS.
Regards,
Jusni

Hi Foozi,

The point of view is showing with precision the details and colors of the birs in his nest. The branches is framing well the bird. The surrounding light is enhancing the colors of the Etlingera elatior. Have a nice day.

Hi Foozi.
What a sweet scene and you managed to reflect it with excellent skill. All main objects (cute bird, nice nest and impressive branch) create a wonderful subject and BG is also fine in its colourfulness and smoothness. Well done. My compliments and best regards.
Alexei.
P.S. After business trip I have caught a cold and have not recovered finally yet.
