White-throated Kingfisher

This is from my archive. WTKF is my favourite bird but I find it so difficult to shoot. Being at paddy planting area, normally the view is plain and the WTKF likes to perch on the post, small tree trunks, fences and at clear places. The moment it sees you moving nearer it will definitely fly oaway. But if you stay in your car and off course in the hide, then not much problems will be encountered.
i spotted this one near my office. I think it dug a hole somewhere near to lay eggs.
In order to shoot at it, I drive slowly under this tree and managed to have a shot facing up to it.

The White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) also known as the White-breasted Kingfisher or Smyrna Kingfisher, is a tree kingfisher which is widely distributed in Eurasia from Bulgaria, Turkey, east through South Asia to the Philippines. This kingfisher is a resident over much of its range, and may only move short distances.

This is a large kingfisher, 28 cm in length. The adult has a bright blue back, wings and tail. Its head, shoulders, flanks and lower belly are chestnut, and the throat and breast are white. The large bill and legs are bright red. The flight of the White-throated Kingfisher is rapid and direct, the short rounded wings whirring. In flight, large white patches are visible on the blue and black wings. Sexes are similar, but juveniles are a duller version of the adult.
H. s. gularis of the Philippines has only the neck and throat white. Race fusca is found in Peninsular India and Sri Lanka and is slightly smaller, bluer and with a darker brown underside than the nominate race found in northwestern India. Race saturatior is found in the Andaman Islands and is larger with darker brown underparts. Race perpulchra (not always recognized) is found in northeastern India and is smaller than fusca with paler underparts.[4] Albinism has been noted on occasion.[5]

The call of this kingfisher is a chuckling chake-ake-ake-ake-ake. They are particularly noisy in the breeding season.

Hello Foozi !
These birds are wonderful and, even if they are difficult to shoot, you managed to get an excellent shot. I like the composition, with the bird making a nice diagonal, and it's nice also to the see the natural environment where you have seen the bird. Excellent details, great composition, nice POV. The colors may be a bit too saturated for my taste, but this is only my opinion, and the picture is very beautiful as it is. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Foozi,

You must have been right under this Kingfisher to get this magnificent shot showing off his white throat perfectly. I love the beak, the beautiful colors and the fine details. A wonderful setting and diagonal composition.

very beautiful colors and decor
Have a good night

Hello Foozi,
a splendid capture of the White-throated Kingfisher taken from a very interesting POV with good sharpness, very beautiful colours well saturated.
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

Although it looks like the exposure may have been a challenge on this one, Foozi, you have lovely, vivid colors where they count, on the bird, and razor-sharp clarity. Nice positioning on the branches and filling of the frame diagonally. I do wish the eye were a bit more clear, but that might be difficult, technically, I realize. Well done and excellent note.

Regards,
Jim

Hi Foozi,

The bird is impressive. The close-up view is showing the details and colors of the White-throated Kingfisher. The use of a tripod and the exposure speed of 1/40 of a seconds is giving a nice image. The branches are framing well the bird. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre
