Another spectacular butterfly from my trip to Sabah last year. Found this one at Poring Hot Spring, the perfect place for those of you who enjoy watching butterflies.
This is a Clipper (Parthenos sylvia) from the family Nymalidae and is a fairly common species through Southeast Asia from Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Java, Bali, Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya. It is found in primary lowland rainforest from sea level to around 300m.
The Clipper is a powerful and fast flying butterfly. The flight consists of short periods of gliding, alternating every few seconds with shallow but rapid flickering wing beats.
Both sexes commonly nectar at Lantana and other flowers. Males will also settle on the ground to drink moisture. If disturbed they fly up immediately, circle around at a height of about 3 metres, and then resettle nearby.

Hello Chris,
A very interesting view on this spectacular Clipper. I like the pose you caught here, looks like it would be ready to fly away. Most beautiful patterns and wings of the butterfly. Excellent sharpness and fine presentation.
Thanks and kind regards
Anne

Hi Chris,
Awesome clear ans precised focused image, and wath a POV! this visual angle make the image evolution in impressive way. Correct ligth, correct saturation. A image very suitable to see the species chars. TFS, regards, Jesús

I can imagine this butterfly rarely sitting still and giving you this kind of an open-wing pose, Chris. How you have managed it at shutter speed 1/90 is a miracle of sorts.
The image is excellent in terms of rich details and colours on the open wings captured from a dorsal point of view.
Well done and thanks.

Hello Chris,
Nice to see this species taken in the wild instead of a butterfly house!
Though the POV demands a high DOF, you show the features of this Clipper with good overall sharpness and colours against a nice contrasting natural BG.
Thanks and all the best,
Ivan
