This is the Philippine Eagle Owl
(Bubo philippensis)

This is one of the largest owls in the world, with a wingspan of about about 48 inches (120 centimeters). What the eagle-owl eats is a mystery; the species is so poorly known that not even this basic information is available. We do know, however, that most observations of the species have been made in lowland forest near or beside rivers. Since a related species in Malaysia feeds on fish, Philippine eagle-owl might also.

This species has a small, severely fragmented population which is undergoing a rapid decline as a result of extensive lowland deforestation throughout its range and perhaps hunting, qualifying it as Vulnerable.

This owl is not tame but not too wild. It can interact with people without hurting them. I had the chance to carry it on my shoulder.

This is a captive bird, as you can see in its eyes, its stare is not scary or sharp. Maybe it misses its natural habitat.

Great capture Lorie. The colours are so beautiful and the tight cropping together with the hypnotic look in the eyes simply makes the picture. Well done and welcome on TN.

Very beautiful post Lorie, captivating. I love everything except that I would have liked to see in a bigger format, taking advantage of the 800 pixels TN offers you. For the rest, including the note, congratulations.

What a beautiful, clean, shot. I like how crisp the feathers are.

Excellent and real macro work with excellent composition. Tks for sharing Ganesh

Hi Lorie Joy,

Whow what a picture !!!!! What an expression in the face of that owl. It's a excellent portrait closeup, with superb details. And the colours are also naturel. What a large nozzle has this bird. Exactly what LordPotty say it seems a junction between an eagle and owl. Nice composition. Regards and TFS Bob

Hi Lorie,
This guy is entrancing! It couldn't be any clearer. What an amazing thing to do(carry him on your shoulder)! It makes me so sad to hear about animals of any kind being forced out of their natural environment for whatever reason. Thanks so very much for sharing him!
