OK - this picture has little photographic merit other than for what it shows - an Ice Blink Rainbow. This strange, anemic, rainbow is caused by the sunlight reflecting off the pack ice some distance ahead. The air immediately infront of the pack ice is chilled and any moisture condenses forming the fog bank which you can see in this shot - below the cirrus clouds and above the ocean.

The light shining through the fog is refracted by the water droplets creating this weird rainbow.

Classic Ice Blink:-

Ice blink" refers to a white glare seen on the underside of low clouds indicating the presence of ice which may be beyond the range of vision or over the horizon.

Similarly, "water sky" refers to dark streaks on the underside of low clouds, indicating the presence of open water in the vicinity of sea ice - a helpful indication when working in sea ice or near the polar ice cap as to which direction to take. Otherwise, your ship may get "nipped".

Such techniques helped the Inuit to travel safely on the ice, and assisted explorers looking for the Northwest Passage.

Hi James,
A beautiful and rare to see (almost impossible) for me phenomenon. You have captured it excellently with a very nice composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi James,
This is a most impressive natural piece of art. I've never seen this kind of Phenonenom before and will probably never see it, since my location on the earth is wrong. Your note helps to explain it perfectly.
