[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello everyone and thankyou all for your kind comments on my 300th posting! Todays' is a seascape from Franz Josef Land. It was take from a zodiac on a cruise round the icebergs. The berg on the left has tipped on its side at some stage - the scalloping is evidence of this.

It was taken with a Canon 10D

The picture was taken at about 10pm (24 hr daylight at this latitude). The hills in the background are interesting. First the low cloud/fog is caused by water vapour condensing due to chilling from the icecap. Secondly, they show clear evidence of isostatic or eustatic 'movement'. Basically, the top was 'planed' off by the ice sheet and the weight of the ice pressed the land down wards. When most of the ice had melted and relieved of the weight, the land rose again (and is still rising). Believe it or not this is still happening in the UK - the north and Scotland are still rising and the south is dipping (it was like a see-saw effect). This is all quite unrelated to present Global Warming effects.

Isostasy is a term used in Geology to refer to the state of gravitational equilibrium between the earth's lithosphere and asthenosphere such that the tectonic plates "float" at an elevation which depends on their thickness and density. It is invoked to explain how different topographic heights can exist at the Earth's surface. When a certain area of lithosphere reaches the state of isostasy, it is said to be in isostatic equilibrium. It is important to note that isostasy is not a process that upsets equilibrium, but rather one which restores it. It is generally accepted that the earth is a dynamic system that responds to loads in many different ways, however isostasy provides an important 'view' of the processes that are actually happening. Nevertheless, certain areas (such as the Himalayas) are not in isostatic equilibrium, which has forced researchers to identify other reasons to explain their topographic heights (in the case of the Himalayas, by proposing that their elevation is being "propped-up" by the force of the impacting Indian plate).

In the simplest example, isostasy is the principle of Buoyancy observed by Archimedes in his bath, where he saw that when an object was immersed, an amount of water equal in volume to that of the object was displaced. On a geological scale, isostasy can be observed where the Earth's strong lithosphere exerts stress on the weaker asthenosphere which, over geological time flows laterally such that the load of the lithosphere is accommodated by height adjustments.

Eustasy and relative sea level change

Eustasy is another cause of relative sea level change quite different from isostatic causes. The term "eustasy" or "eustatic" refers to changes in the amount of water in the oceans, usually due to global climatic changes. When the Earth's climate cools, a greater proportion of the earths water is stored on land masses in the form of Glaciers ,snow, etc. This results in a relative fall in global sea levels (relative to a stable land mass). The refilling of ocean basins by glacier meltwater at the end of ice ages is an example of eustatic sea level rise.

A second significant cause of eustatic sea level rise is thermal expansion of sea water, when the Earth's mean temperature increases. Current estimates of global eustatic rise from tide gauge records and satellite altimetry is about +3 mm/a (see 2007 IPCC report). Global sea level is also affected by vertical crustal movements, changes in the rotational rate of the Earth, (see Postglacial rebound), large scale changes in continental margin and changes in the spreading rate of the ocean floor.

When the term "relative" is used in context with "sea level change", the implication is that both eustasy and isostasy are at work.

Another wonderful shot of a scene most of us will never seen. And excellent notes teaching many of us things we don't know. A beautiful and very frigid looking seascape. The details of the scalloping iceberg is shown in great detail. Wonderful dof and composition.

Hello again James, this picture I knew was yours, but I guess that was an easy guess... who else would go that far and bring such a great picture? The pink light is fantastic and it's even more fantastic on such a subject, those big icebergs. The texture comes out beautifully in this light, it's quite fantastic to look at. Beside that this is taken at a very impressive location, the DOF in this photo is what I really like. Just the right amount of depth to still see details in the BG while the full focus is on the ice formation in front.

Hi James!

This is a great seascape picture with a wonderful perspective given by the subtle composition. The wall of ice on the left points to the horizon and leads us into the image. I also like the tranquility that emanates from the picture.

This is a very interesting photo i.e.showing no ice floating in the water other than the icebergs!

For me personally interesting/surprising - how close your Zodiac Driver went to the Iceberg; cruising in Antarctica, our drivers kept a big distance from icebergs...

I like very much the way you controlled focus and depth of field, thus allowing the viewer to see the intricate pattern of an iceberg, which had turned.

We were fortunate to see from the Icebreaker (turned Cruise Ship) an iceberg turning, giving the tour-leader a chance to wag his finger at the Zodiac Drivers.

I do not recall ever experiencing a day without any fog/clouds during the cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula.

I do admire your control of exposure - which is rather tricky -due to the reflections plus combination of ice and water...

A beautiful scenery, beautifully presented.
