Hooded Pitta
(Pitta sordida)
Size: 18 cm

Description:
Note its all-green plumage, with black head and short tail; white spot in wing distinct in flight.

Voice:
A monosyllabic whistle pih-pih.

Habits:
Mainly forest bird found in closed forests, mature secondary growth and during migration, in scrub. It hops on the ground turning over fallen leaves to prey on worms, insects and other invertebrates. Sometimes it perches on a branch near the ground and it flies off low and fast.

Distribution:
Uncommon winter visitor in some parts of the island.
