Black Bittern
(Ixobrychus flavicollis) 黑鳽
Size: 58 cm

A medium-sized, very dark heron, with a bold, yellow neck stripe. Upper-parts dull black, browner on female. Itís below whitish-streaked rufous and black. Belly grey. Immature more streaked and upper-parts feathers have buff fringe.

Occasional harsh ker. Maleís breeding call is deep boom like a distance foghorn.

Inhabits reed-beds with bushes and bushy margins of canals and rivers. Itís crepuscular, solitary and extremely secretive. It may fly quite high to feeding sites. Often hunts from bushes, sitting motionless for hours waiting for fish or amphibian prey. Usually nests low in a waterside bush.
