Brown Hawk Owl
(Ninox scutulata) 鹰鸮
Size: 30 cm

Unmistakable; apart from the smaller endemic Philippine Hawk-Owl, N.philippensis, the only Ninox owl in the region.

A double hoot hu-oop repeated incessantly at dawn and dusk.

Breeds in closed forest and more open woodlands. During migration it can turn up in mangroves, gardens and other wooded areas to 1500m elevations. Becomes active just after dark, feeding mainly on insects at the edge of the forest. It nest in a cavity in a tree.

A common resident breeder and winter visitors in Singapore.
