Brahminy Kite
(Haliastur indus)
Size: 45 cm

Note its diagnostic chestnut-brown upper-parts and black wingtips. The immature bird is mottled brown.

A nasal, mewing call.

Mainly a coastal bird, frequently seen in mangroves and harbour areas. Also found along inland rivers and in wooded terrain far from water; occurs locally up into mountain elevations. Flies low, dropping down to catch prey or pick up carrion.

Common resident breeder throughout, including north and south offshore islands.
