Indian Cuckoo

Size: 33 cm

Description:
In the field, best distinguished from the Eurasian Cuckoo, C. canorus (a vagrant to java) and the Oriental Cuckoo by its call.

Voice:
The penetrating 4-note whistle, with 4th lower note, is diagnostic.

Habits:
Found in forested areas, from the lowlands to 1000m. It is more often heard than seen. It usually perches high and flies like a small hawk within the forest canopy, looking for small invertebrate food. This cuckoo is known to be nest-parasitic.

Distribution:
A common winter visitor in Singapore.
