Common Flameback
(Dinopium javenense) 金背三趾啄木鸟
Size: 28 cm

A medium-sized, golden-backed woodpecker with long and solid black moustachial stripes. Both sexes have black eye-stripes join to the black rear neck stripe. Male has red crown while female has black crown. Black-scaled white under-parts and red rump contrasting with black tail. Rather small bill and has only 3-toes.

It call is similar to but higher pitch than Black-Rumped Woodpecker.

Inhabits damp woodland and mangroves. Feeds on invertebrates at all levels but mostly rather low. Itís often in mixed hunting groups. It Nest in self-made tree hole.

Common breeding resident throughout Singapore

Thank you for showing this cute little Woodpecker with his ''red wig''.

Did you know, that woodpeckers have a specially ''cushioned'' brain to avoid concussion from the repeated wood-pecking?!? I saw a documentary about this a while ago and think that evolution - particularly in birds - is really wonderful!!

I like your work very much: the layout of the photo is very attractive! Focus and exposure perfect, and the colours a bonus.

If anything could be improved it would be the font of "Common Flameback". The bird is so delicate, and the bold font a bit overpowering...

The eye contact is absolutely cute.
