Black-Winged Kite (Black-Shoulder Kite)
(Elanus caeruleus) 黑翅鸢
Size: 30 cm

Unmistakable in this region. Note slender, falcon-like appearance in flight.

A short, soft whistle near nesting area.

Found in dry, savanna-like woodlands and open country with scattered trees and grassy fields. Easy to spot and observe. Itís usually solitary or in resident pairs. It perches on an open branch or pole. Flies low with lifted wings; hovers over the ground before dropping into the grass to catch insects and small vertebrates.

Common resident breeder throughout Singapore including north offshore islands.
