Yellow Bittern
(Ixobrychus sinensis)
Size: 38 cm
Description:
Smallest in our region; upper-parts yellowish-brown; under-parts paler; bill yellow; legs greenish-yellow. Male has a black cap and plain back while the female has buffy stripes on under-parts and back; no black cap. Juvenile’s under-parts are whitish with dark streaks above and below.
Voice:
Described as a chattering kerek-kerek; short kakak-kakak when taking off.
Habits:
Inhabits reed-beds and wet scrub near rivers and wet paddy. Solitary but breeding densities can be quite high. It’s usually seen in feeding fights, particularly when feeding the young in reed-bed nests. It feeds on fish, amphibians and insects.
Distribution:
Common winter visitor throughout the island including Ubin and Sentosa. |

Hi Ang,
Excellent shot on this Yellow Bittern. Nice detail and colors in the plumage. Although tightly cropped in the frame I think it works well. Beautiful OOF background!!
