Little Egret

Size: 65 cm

Description:
Small, pure white; bill black; legs black; toes yellow (black in Sumatran race nigripes). Genders look alike. Adult has a summer/ breeding: Long breeding plumes: two droop at nape, a few lacy ones on the back and rump; face bluish-green, lores reddish. (Little Egrets from different parts of the world have different colour changes. This description is for those found in Singapore). A one year-old juvenile bird has a greenish bill with black markings; lores pale green; legs dull black with green.

Voice:
Usually silent and it described as a croaking call, at its nest.

Habits:
A successful egret found in variety of climate zones and wetland habitats. It prefers coastal estuaries, mangroves, freshwater marshes and paddy fields. Itís often seen near the coast, but sometimes far inland. This is a quick and elegant birds and it feeds by walking briskly along, sometimes running to catch aquatic prey. It breeds in trees near the feeding grounds, in colonies with other water birds.

Distribution:
Very common non-breeding winter visitor and resident throughout the island, including north offshore islands. The race nigripes from Java is a rare visitor.
