Golden-Backed Weaver (Male)

Size: 13 cm
Breeding male’s head and napped all black, bright red eyes, a bright yellow mantle and deep chestnut below. Non-breeding male, female and immature are olive-green above with much streaking, a yellowish supercilium, and yellowish below with buffy-orange across the breast. Immature is like a pale buffy female.
Song is very complex and rambling with both high hissed notesand long, deep, descending snoring notes.
Widespread and sometimes numerous from 500-1800m, with a preference for vegetation near water, although not restricted to it, and with evidence of erratic wanderings.
Rare escapee and resident breeder of Singapore. Originate from East Africa .
