[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Crested Serpent Eagle
(Spilornis cheela) 蛇鵰
Size: 58 cm

Description:
Its rounded shape and somewhat spotted plumage, with an insignificant crest, are diagnostic. Note white wing band on flying bird. A similar species, S. rufipectus, is endemic to Sulawesi.

Voice:
Often utters a loud and penetrating wheew-wheew when soaring.

Habits:
Probably the most common forest raptor in its range. Occurs from lowland primary rainforest to mature secondary growth, in clearings and along forest edges, into submontane elevations. This rather conspicuous bird can be seen soaring high above the forest or sitting motionless on mid-storey branch looking for small prey.

Distribution:
A rare resident in Singapore.
