(Halcyon coromanda) 赤翡翠
Size: 27 cm - R/RB+WV
Adult has bright rufous; violet-tinged above, bluish-white lower back or rump-patch, red-bill. Juvenile has a much browner colour than the adult, narrow dark bars below; browner bill; back or rump brilliant blue (less whitish).
A delightful, descending, staccato of whistle-like notes (up to 18) tp-p-p-p-p…lasting for 1.4 sec and repeated every 3 – 5 sec.
Solitary and difficult to see them in the forest, second growth, and mangroves, occasionally along forest streams. Varied diet includes crabs, snails, insects and probably fish. It perches in the understory dropping to the ground to catch it prey.
A rare winter visitor and resident breeder in Singapore.
