This is the national bird of Peru

Identification

32cm, 1.5 in long
A member of the cotinga family and one of the two species in the genus Rupicola
A medium-sized passerine with a large disk-like crest and scarlet or brilliant orange plumage, a black tail and wings. The bushy crest on the forehead lends an unusual shape to the head, and makes identification even easier (although the coloration is usually enough). Color of the non-black plumage and of eyes differ among subspecies.

The female is browner and darker with a shorter crest.

Distribution

Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia

Habitat

Gorges and ravines in cloud forest on both slopes of the Andes.

Behaviour

The diet consists mainly of fruits.
[edit] Breeding

Males are polygamous and display in communal leks. The females build shallow nests with mud and plant material on the walls of rocks, hence the common name.

Dear Ang,
a most unusual bird, besides the head the wing feathers also look odd, and I add your photo to my theme "Nature's Oddities"

The head plus 'cape' make me think of the carnival in Venice :-)

Your notes are educational, thank you and I like the natural colours.
Thanks for sharing.
Warm Greetings from the Tzaneen Dam in Limpopo, South Africa
