(Himantopus himantopus) 黑翅长脚鹬
Size: 36 cm - R/WV/PM - CR, SB
Location: Thachalom (Thailand)
Black above, white below, white head and neck, long pink legs, long thin black bill. Male has black back with green gloss while female has brown back. The immature has grey, sandy wings.
Areas of shallow water, fresh or brackish, with margins of sand or mud, but does not require vegetation to any extent. Usually occurs on lagoons or in estuarine or delta areas. Often loosely colonial when breeding. These birds pick up their food from sand or water. They mainly eat insects and crustaceans. The nest site is a bare spot on the ground near water. These birds often nest in small groups, sometimes with Avocets.
Distribution: Rare winter visitor and passage migrant in Singapore.
