Jewel of Thailand

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
A member of the ginger family indigenous to Thailand, Curcuma petiolata (cordata) is quite simply spectacular. The inflorescence shown is 25cm tall and still growing. Another can be seen emerging and a healthy plant may produce 3 to 5 inflorescences. They are completely dormant in winter and usually start sprouting around May in northern Thailand. The inflorescence is not only beautiful, it's also supposed to be delicious. Perhaps I'll try eating one once a few more have appeared ... |
