I really did not enjoy seeing these poor elephants in the towns.
After the destruction of large areas of forests and devastating floods the Thai government enforced a logging ban in 1989.This was good news for the rain forests but it had devastating consequences to the lives of thousands of elephants whom had been "domesticated" and used in the logging industry with their mahoots. With the owners out of work many where reduced to a life of begging as well as scorching city tarmacs, pollution, noise, traffic and a diet that falls short of the 200Kg of vegetation required have resulted in street elephants having an estimated life expectancy of just five years.
Founded in 2006 the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation provides viable alternatives for the livelihoods of these elephants and their mahoots with a high standard of health and welfare. |
