[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Something different from the cold Travelogue. I had a short vacation on Koh Samui after a intensive two week business trip to Singapore. It was one of those vacations that there was little action other than taking a tourist trip across the island, fishing and taking a massage.
Of course a camera is brought along on all trips so also on this mini break. After a nice stroll on the beach I decided to use the macro function on my little G9 to get a nice shot of this little blue stinger, of which I do not know the scientific name. The little blue stingers were also the result of some instant panic attacks when we swam around in the sea and collided with them.
It would be nice if somebody can give me the name of this blue stinger and also to let me know if it is a Jellyfish.
Update on my note Aug 13 2014: this is the Janthina janthina or common purple snail. |

Hi Niek,
I have not seen this before, from this angle it looks like a blue sea shell with something white trailing behind, like a snail. Nice details shot, I can smell the sea and tropical air.

Hello Niek,
I think this is a stranded Blue Portugese man o' War, Physalia physalis.
It is not a jellyfish but a colonial collection of organisms that can sting. Nice to see one of this on the beach!
Thanks and enjoy your Easter,
Ivan
Funny creature but your note is very useful. I miss Thailand :(
