[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There are many species in this family that have almost identical markings on wings. Hope that I have sharp eyes and identified this butterfly correctly.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Genus: Neptis (the sailors) (Phaedyma)
Species: N. columella (P. columella)
Common Name: Shortbanded Sailor
Thai Common Name: ผีเสื้อกะลาสี(เทา)แถบสั้น

Members of this family are generally brush-footed butterflies, this refers to the reduced pair of the first legs or forelegs that are covered in dense hairs.
The front pair of legs is inconspicuous and much smaller that the other four. They are not used for walking or holding but for cleaning their antennae and other parts of their body.

Butterflies in this family have a distinctive way of flying, after every wingbeat, they hold their wings stretched out from their body and glide for a while without moving their wings.

This butterfly is one of the many black-and-white "Sailor" species which occur in several genuses in the sub-family Nymphalinae.

It has a graceful gliding flight, almost "sailing" through the air, and usually alights on sunlit spots with its wings open, as in the photograph. The underside is a rich grey-brown with white stripes arranged as on the upperside of the butterfly.

The species is sometimes confused with the similar-looking Common Sailor (Neptis hylas papaja). However, when scrutinised closely, the white markings on the wings are slightly different. The Short Banded Sailor is also very often the larger of the two.

Wingspan of 50-60 mm

Hello Jitti,
Excellent close up.I liked POV,cross framing, details, lighting and composition a lot.

Jolie composition et belle netteté.
Bonne journée.

Hi Jitti,
pretty species, well presented!
These elegant gliding flyers are among my favorites - we have a closely related species (Neptis rivularis) here around Vienna, flying around in a very charming way in early summer even next to my front door, and looking very similar, too.
Fascinating to see its cousin from a place as far away as Thailand.
Well explaining notes.
Thank you! Best regards,

Brilliant sharpness and composition. An excellent image.
Light is perfect, superb details.
Well done.

Hi Jitti

Beautiful butterfly. You have captured it so well and in such a lovely surrounding.I really like the rich green colours.Wonderful DOF and POV.Nicely composed.TFS

Excellent shot. The butterfly is similiar to European Neptis species. Very good composition and colours.

Enjoy your notes.
The unfocused leaf on the left could have been left out. Minor issue.
I first thought that it was a ZEBRA type; but you are right.
Great register.
Warm regards, M.
