[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's my pleasure to introduce some furry wildlife:
Central American Agouti (Dasyprocta punctata; Guatusa; Aguti. Dasyproctidae). It inhabits forests. In the National Parks of Costa Rica I have seen it waiting curiously for tourists to pass. The tropical rodent is an important seed disperser. Since hunting is forbidden in all of Costa Rica for all animals, its existence is not in danger. Here it is approaching our coffee table outside the Lodge near the Piedras Blancas National Park. The owners leave some food morsels.

The question of how Rodents arrived on the isolated continent of South America during Tertiary times is not settled. Fossil finds point to the supercontinent Laurasia as the origin. The Primates are thought to have arrived in South America from Africa on some big tropical vegetation raft. After a severe storm such rafts are known to assemble on big rivers and float into the sea. For flying vertebrates and insects colonisation events are well documented: winds and storms can carry flying animals over great expanses.
