Just back from a holiday in Costa Rica. I really enjoyed the "pura vida" in this wonderful country. One of the most impressing animals I saw there was the Tree Frog. I discovered one of these cute animals in Cahuita on the Caribean coast. The red eyed tree frog has bright red eyes and has a really bright color of green withy blue and yellow stripped sides. It also has funny looking orange toes. This is definitely one of the more beautiful species of frogs! This frog comes from the rainforest of Costa Rica. Why do they have red eyes? Some believe it is a form of protection called "startle coloration". This frog tends to be active at night, so if the frog is awakened in the daytime as might happen if a predator chanced upon it despite its excellent day time camouflage, the eyes pop abruptly open. Since they are suddenly so bright, they startle the predator, who is likely to pause, if only for a moment. big eyes staring at you could be those of an enemy, poised to attack. A moments hesitation would be all the agile frog would need to make a leap to safety.

It was not easy to make this photo. A took this shot at night and using the autofocus was not easy. Every time I tried to focus, the camera started hunting. I guess this problem is due to the weak helplight on my nikon D70. Using the macromode didn't work. The problem even got worse. I took at least 100 photo's but most of them were worthless. I hope you like this one cause it's one of my best efforts!
Tomorrow I'll show you more tree frog!
