A scanned slide from Costa Rica. I took this photo in the year 2000.

Members of the genus Tropidacris are the largest known grasshoppers. The Tropidacris Cristata (Linnaeus 1758) is about 16 cm. In addition to size, they are conspicuous because of their bright colors and their destruction of wild and cultivated plants. Their variability, especially in colors and color-pattern, have led entomologists, from the times of Linnaeus on, to describe many "species" based largely on characters that later proved devoid of systematic value.
Most species are relatively common and sometimes they become abundant and destructive, which places them among the most obvious or even spectacular examples of insect life in the American Tropics.

Hi Peter,
Wonderful shot of this gorgeous looking Grasshopper. Very impressive sharpness (considering that it is a scanned image) and lovely colours and markings on its body. The banana leaf presents a fine BG and you have captured a classic pose. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Peter,
Though from a scanned slide, this is an excellent capture of this large Grasshopper. The colours, POV and sharpness are great and I like the diagonal composition on a banana leaf.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,
Have a good weekend,

Hello Peter, that's a fine macro that you have there. The sharpness is great and the exposure is very good. Well composed too, thanks!

Hi Peter!
What a long grasshopper! Really interesting creature! I like especially its colouration. And I can read in your note that it has some 16 cm, really impressive size! If I remember only some Saga species are similar in size to this one, especially among European species of Orthoptera.
According to the technique I believe that a little better DOF would be nice (or maybe - I do not know - picture was sharpned a little too much). Anyway it is still very interesting entomological presentation.
And last, small correction. According to International Codex of Zoological Nomenclature the Latin species name (here cristata) should be writtern in small letter. Only genus name is written in capital letter :)
All the best from Lodz,

Hello Peter. Excellent sharpness of this hopper. Stunning banana leaf in the background. Well done! Jusni
