This is a pair of Rufous-tailed Hummingbird chicks (Amazilia tzacatl) Just a few days before leaving the nest. The nest is a shallow bowl composed of fibers, leafes and with exterior lining of lichens or in some cases moss; the nest is usually found between 1 and 6m. This species is widely distributed from NE Mexico to W Ecuador and Venezuela.(Skutch 1995)

The house on the background is the restored house of the late Alexander F. Skutch (1904-2004). Alexander Skutch is considered by many the father of neotropical ornithology. His studies go from the natural history to the behavioral ecology of several neotropical species. Upon his death the property where he lived since the mid 1930's "Los Cusingos" was donated as a Reserve to Costa Rica. In 2005 The Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor was formed to link the reserve of "Los Cusingos" and "Las Nubes" The later property of York University (Toronto), until the end of the program in May 2008 I was the leader of the Avian Monitoring program. Anyways hope you like the photo! just wanted to add a little backgroung on the house behind the picture.

Hi Simon,

I have never seen a hummingbird nest or young chicks like these. A beautiful shot with wonderful colors and excellent details of the face, beak, eye, wings and plumage. Very interesting notes and a lovely composition.

Hello Simon,

Excellent capture.
Beautiful colours with fantastic definition.
Lighting and composition are splendid.
Good notes.

Amazing clarity, good composition, the next does look too small now that they are almost ready to leave it.

Hi Simon
A fantastic shot of these baby hummingbirds. Good use of flash to bring out some fine details on the growing feathers. I would love to see a sight such as this!
Kind Regards

Hallo Simon
This is so beautiful to look at. The colours and patterns on these chicks plumage is delightful and very pleasing to the eye. The way you have captured the two nestled together is very heart warming and touching. I like the way you have used the light to emphasise the detail of the patterns and shape of the feathers, the same light that created a marvellous catch light in the eye. This is a very special image presented in a delightful manner. I enjoyed looking at this one, as it touched my heart. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
