[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The picture shows a dragonfly found in the coastal carribean rain forest of Costa Rica. The area around Cahuita is beautiful ... the rain forest touches the beach. Light within the forest is often unsuitable to take pictures without a flash. This dragonfly rested close to the coastal forest margin where light conditions allowed to take this picture.
As stated earlier, tropical dragonflies have about the same size as those from temperate regions. In contrast, beetles and butterflies can be much larger in the tropics than their 'sisters and brothers' of non-tropical areas.
I did not succeed in identifying the species. Perhaps, someone knows!?

- natural light in the understory of forest
- ISO 200
- hand-held

NOTE ADDED:
Andy (AndyB) posted a picture of obviously the same species found in the Dominican Republic also close to the beach!

Hello Peter,
A very good capture and nice and sharp for handheld at 1/80.
A good pose and POV with a nice clear BG.
I dont know the ID but it is the same or very similar to one in my gallery which I found in the Dom rep.I searched all over for an ID on that one but had no luck.
Nice work,TFS

HI Peter,

Nice compo, steady hand, POV maybe some lower, but its not disturbing, nice background blur. TFS Reina

Ricardo

Interesting capture Peter with adjusted field depth that offers a limited focus on the front part of the insect and a good diffusion of the bottom.
Appropriate framing, illumination and coloring.
A cordial greeting from Buenos Aires... Ricardo

Hello Peter,
Sorry for delay with comment :)
This is a very good quality macro with fantastic colours (especially the eyes are amazing :>). POV is rather typical for this group of Odonata but it is still nice. Also the DOF and note are very good.
Best regards,
Radomir
