Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Family: Pieridae

Genus: Phoebis

Species: P. sennae

The Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae) is a small to midsized butterfly in the family Pieridae found in the New World. There are several similar species such as the Yellow Angled Sulphur which has angled wings or other sulphurs which are much smaller.Their range is wide, from South America to southern Canada. They are most common from Argentina to southern Texas and Florida, but are often visitors outside this range becoming more rare further north. The common habitats of this butterfly are open spaces, gardens, glades, seashores, and watercourses. The adult butterfly feeds on nectar from many different flowers with long tubes including cordia, bougainvillea, cardinal flower, hibiscus, lantana, and wild morning glory. The breeding season is dependent on the climate of the area, from mid-summer to fall in the cooler areas, to year-round where the climate is warmer. The Cloudless Sulphur starts off as a pitcher-shaped white egg. Eventually it will turn to a pale orange. The egg stage lasts six days.Once the egg hatches, a caterpillar emerges that is yellow to greenish, striped on sides, with black dots in rows across the back. The caterpillar will build a tent in a host plant where it hides in the day. The host plant may be partridge pea (Chamaecrista cinerea), sennas (Senna),[1] clovers (Trifolium), or other legumes (Fabaceae). The caterpillar will usually grow to a length between 1 5/8-1 3/4 in.The caterpillar will form a chrysalis that is pointed at both ends and humped in the middle. The chrysalis will be either yellow or green with pink or green stripes. From the chrysalis comes a large butterfly (2 1/8-2 3/4") with fairly elongated but not angled wings. The male butterfly is clear yellow above and yellow or mottled with reddish brown below and the female is lemon-yellow to golden or white on both surfaces, with varying amounts of black spotting along the margin and a black open square or star on the bottom forewing.

Ciao Luciano,

Hallo Luciano
The contrast between the vividly red flower and the off-white of the wings of the butterfly is really lovely and has great attraction to it. The details captured is beautiful and stands out well, especially the veins on the wings and the tips on the antennas. Thanks for sharing. I want to thank you for all your great postings in 2009 and may you have a wonderful photographic year in 2010. Best regards.

hello luciano,

Thanks for your good words, about the situation!

Hello luciano,

another good image from this butterfly with detail, pose and dof.
fine colours.

Ciao Luciano,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona giornata

Ciao Luciano,
The quality of the image is fine: only the POV is not the best. Even so, the features of the Cloudless Sulphur are well shown with excellent sharpness and colours with a fine contrast against the red flowers.
Thanks and best wishes for 2010!

Hello Luciano,

An excellent macro with such striking colors, sharpness & details. Lovely POV, pose & BG. Well taken, composed & presented. TFS & A Happy New Year.

Best Wishes!

Hello Luciano,
Hope you'll be doing fine my friend. This is a wonderful photo indeed. I think you thought it was not a good shot because the butterfly was photographed from an awkward angle. But actually the vividly, shocking red colour of the flowers and the dark green background have sharpened the image of the butterfly. So a near perfect shot. Thanks for sharing and thanks for your support and encouragement...wish you and your family a happy new year...warmest regards/Abid.
