Family: Nymphalidae
Genus: Heliconius
Species:H. charithonia
Heliconius charithonia, the zebra longwing or zebra heliconian, is a species of butterfly belonging to the subfamily Heliconiinae of the Nymphalidae. The boldly striped black and white wing pattern is aposematic, warning off predators.
The species is distributed across South and Central America and as far north as southern Texas and peninsular Florida; there are migrations north into other American states in the warmer months.
Zebra longwing adults roost communally at night in groups of up to 60 adults for safety from predators. The adult butterflies are unusual in feeding on pollen as well as on nectar; the pollen enables them to synthesize cyanogenic glycosides that make their bodies toxic to potential predators. Caterpillars feed on various species of Passionflower, evading the plants' defensive trichomes by biting them off or laying silk mats over them.
H. charithonia is found in South America, Central America, the West Indies, Mexico,Cuba, south Texas and peninsular Florida. Adults sometimes migrate north to New Mexico, South Carolina, and Nebraska during the warmer months. It was declared the official butterfly for the state of Florida in the United States in 1996.The species frequents tropical hammocks, moist forests, edges, or fields. |

Ciao Luciano, bellissima anche la Dominicana, altra gran macro di una favolosa esotica, fantastici colori e ottima nitidezza, bravissimo, ciao Silvio
Hi Luciano,
No way you used flash here... But yes, you did. The result's incredible. Not only due to the exceptional light management, as the diagonal composition itself is very-very spectacular and pleasant to the viewer. Excellent shallow DoF to gain all attention on to the beautiful tropical butterfly. Majestic shot again. Bravo!
Kind regards from Ireland, László

Hello Luciano,
Most probably, I have seen this 🦋 in 🇮🇳 too. But haven't captured yet.
Well captured in its natural habitat. Although I like bit 'Butter smooth' BG, but here it's not looking such bad. Just that bit big trunk looks bit unwanted here. But what we can do! Can't tell 🦋 to go and sit in better place :-)
Thanks for sharing,
Regards,
Srikumar
Bonjour Luciano,
La végétation cadre bien le papillon. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du papillon Heliconius charithonia. La bonne luminosité fait ressortir la beauté des couleurs. Bonne journée.
