The Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) was sometimes previously known as Man O'War, reflecting its rakish lines, speed, and aerial piracy of other birds.

It is widespread in the tropical Atlantic, breeding colonially in trees in Florida, the Caribbean and Cape Verde Islands. It also breeds along the Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico to Ecuador including the Galapagos Islands.

It has occurred as a vagrant as far from its normal range as the Isle of Man, Denmark, Spain, England, and British Columbia.

The Magnificent Frigatebird is 100 cm (39 inches) long with a 215 cm (85 inch) wingspan. Males are all black with a scarlet throat pouch which is inflated like a balloon in the breeding season. Although the feathers are black, the scapular feathers produce a purple iridescence when they reflect sunlight. Females are black, but have a white breast and lower neck sides, a brown band on the wings and a blue eye ring. Immature birds have a white head and underparts.

This species is very similar to the other frigatebirds and is similarly sized to all but the Lesser Frigatebird. However, it lacks a white axillary spur, and juveniles show a distinctive diamond-shaped belly patch.

The Magnificent Frigatebird is silent in flight, but makes various rattling sounds at its nest.

This species feeds mainly on fish, and also attacks other seabirds to force them to disgorge their meals. Frigatebirds never land on water, and always take their food items in flight.

They spend days and nights on the wing, with an average ground speed of 10 km/hour, covering 223±208 km before landing. They alternately climb in thermals, to altitudes occasionally as high as 2500 m, and descend to near the sea surface (Chastel et al. 2003). The only other bird known to spend days and nights on the wing is the Common Swift.


La fregata magnifica (Fregata magnificens Mathews, 1914) è un uccello marino della famiglia dei Fregatidi.

Lunga un metro, con un'apertura alare di 215 cm, è interamente nera fatta eccezione per il collo. Questo è di colore rosso nei maschi e bianco nelle femmine; nel maschio ospita una tasca che viene gonfiata durante la stagione dell'accoppiamento per richiamare l'attenzione delle femmine e allo stesso tempo per far risuonare il suo richiamo, dal suono simile a un sonaglio. Sebbene nere le piume scapolari producono un'iridescenza violetta quando riflettono la luce solare. Le femmine hanno anche una banda marrone sulle ali e un anello oculare blu. I giovani hanno la testa e le parti inferiori bianche.

Uccello pelagico, è diffuso nell'Oceano Atlantico (Florida, Caraibi, Capo Verde) e lungo la costa pacifica americana tra il Messico e l'Ecuador (incluse le Isole Galápagos). Alcuni esemplari sono stati rinvenuti anche sull'Isola di Man, in Danimarca, Spagna, Inghilterra e, sul Pacifico, nella Columbia britannica.

Questa specie trascorre giorni e notti in volo con una velocità media al suolo di 10 km/h, senza mai atterrare sull'acqua. Durante un singolo volo in media percorre all'incirca 200 km, anche se in talune occasioni la distanza percorsa può superare i 400 km. Si "arrampicano" sulle correnti termiche ascensionali a volte fino ad una quota di 2500 m per poi discendere fino alla superficie dell'oceano.

Dopo il corteggiamento durante il quale il maschio esibisce la sua sacca gulare e la fa vibrare, la femmina sceglie il suo compagno e formeranno una coppia monogama per una stagione riprodutiva. Ogni femmina depone un uovo bianco, o occasionalmente due, che viene covato per circa 50 giorni da entrambi i genitori, che si alternano in turni di 10–15 giorni. I piccoli imparano a volare a circa 7 mesi di età, e continuano a essere cibati dai genitori per altri 6 mesi mentre apprendono le complesse tecniche necessarie a procacciarsi il cibo (soprattutto pesci) autonomamente.
SI cibano prevalentemente di pesci, meduse, crostacei e calamari, ma queste abitudini alimentari possono variare con il variare della disponibilità di cibo. A seconda di ciò possono procurarsi il cibo in tre modi differenti. Quando cacciano, rastrellano la superficie del mare e catturano le prede col becco, evitando di bagnarsi. Altre volte invece tormentano opportunisticamente altri uccelli, tirando loro le penne della coda, finché questi lasciano cadere le loro prede. Infine possono anche praticare il cleptoparassitismo, inseguendo senza sosta altre specie come gabbiani, sule e sterne, finché si vedono costretti a rigurgitare il cibo, che le fregate poi afferrano al volo.

Hi Luciano,

I have never seen this sleek looking Frigatebird before! A magnificent shot showing the beautiful curves of his wings and his aerodynamic grace. The black bird against the blue sky is wonderful.

A superb in-flight capture of a male Magnificent Frigatebird. The details of the wings and their superb shape, the red display pouch and even the eye can be seen with fine sharpness and colours.
I wish i could have taken one like this when we were in Tobago, but that was before digital photography!
