This Mona Monkey was wild but had learned how to 'make a living' posing for tourists!

The Mona Monkey (Cercopithecus mona) is an Old World monkey that lives throughout western Africa. The Mona Monkey can also be found on the island of Grenada as it was transported to the island aboard slave ships headed to the New World during the 18th century. This guenon lives in groups of up to 35 in arboreal regions. It mainly feeds on fruit but sometimes eats insects and leaves.

The Mona Monkey has brown agouti fur with a white rump. Its tail and legs are black and the face is blue-grey with a dark stripe across the face. The Mona Monkey carries food in cheek pouches.

Statistics
Head and body length: Female: 37-45cm, Male: 41-63. Tail length: Female: 53-65cm, Male: 64-88. Weight: Male: 2400-5300g.

Physical description
Mona monkeys have a brown agouti back with a white rump, a black tail and black outer-parts on the limbs. They have cheek pouches in which to carry food while they forage. The face is a blue-grey colour with a dark stripe running from each eye to each ear, a white forehead and a pink muzzle.

Distribution
Mona monkeys range from Ghana to Cameroon.

Habitat
They inhabit primary and secondary forests.

Diet
This species feeds on fruit, leaves, shoots and insects.

Behaviour
Mona monkeys live in groups of 8-35 (average 12), typically consisting of one male and numerous females. They are diurnal and arboreal, and move quadrupedally through the forest.

Reproduction
Little is known about the mona monkey's reproductive biology.

A great close-up of this cute little Monkey. Super detail achieved which gives us a great look at his beautiful fur. Love the intensity in his face as he tries bitting into something to eat. Good eye contact. Well done!!
I'm not sure if I ever mentioned this to you before James, but I still remember that you were the first person to critique my very first photo posted here on TN. I still think about how excited I was that someone in another country would take the time to let me know that they liked one of my photos. Hello James,
A nice close portrait of a Mona Monkey caught in the act of chewing something. Nice POV taken to a high technical standard in a pleasing composition with a contrasting dark neutral BG.
I didn't know this W. African species is feral in this psrt of the W. Indies.

There is a great intensity in the little face, and I wonder if you made noises with the camera...
