Hello my Friends!
After a longer break, today the next part of "tiger beetle saga"!!! :)

This is a male of Myriochila (Myriochila) melancholica melancholica (14mm), wide-distributed species known from S Europe, Middle East and great part of Africa. This is a day-active tiger beetle but also one of a few European Cicindelidae species regulary attracted to the light.
It is sometimes used as medicine in some African regions (for details please see link no.5 :>).

This specimen was found in SE Albania, in Butrinti village; its habitat you can see here. Usually it can be found near water, both fresh and brakish :)
If you are interested in some additional data about Cicindelidae fauna of Albania, please feel free to see pdf file ;>

I wrote some details about biology and ecology of Cicindelidae in my earlier presentations (please see here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) so today a few words not about beetles but about entomologists who discovered and described a lot of these insects :)

As "always" in taxonomy everything was started thanks to Carl von Linne who in 1758 described the first eight tiger beetle species. After him the most important reserchers were Johann Christian Fabricius, Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim, Auguste Dejean, Baron Maximimilien de Chaudoir, and Sir Henry Walter Bates. Thank to all these entomologists (and also some others) till year 1900 some 1240 species were known (please note that since 1800 only 50 have been described!).

During the next 50 years (1900-1950) one of the best specialist in tiger beetles in the history of this group was Walther W. Horn. Summaring his work with papers of a few other entomologists additional 490 species of Cicindelidae were recognized (Horn described almost 390!!!).
More recently, entomologists like E. Rivalier, Roger Naviaux, Fabio Cassola, Jurgen Wiesner, Karl Werner, Karl Mandl, W. D. Sumlin, Jiri Moravec, R. E. Acciavatti, C.M.C. Brouerius van Nidek, Jorg Gebert, Andrey Matalin, and Peter Schule discovered and descibed some 770 new species!!!

And of course it is not the end! :) Please note that in year 2000, in total some 2430 Cicindelidae species were known for the science. Since that moment (only 7 years!!!) additional 140 species were discovered and named! :)

As always your comments and critiques are welcomed! :>

Welcome back and thanks for this great pic,the details and the sharpness are wonderfulls, not easy to made so perfect, have a nice day,Luciano

Ciao Radomir,
Ciao,
Marcello

Hello Radomir,
very nice presentation of this tiger beetle - a picture with interesting unusual light and natural reserved colours.
As ususal for your pictures, the 'object' of interest is well-focused and shown with excellent sharpness.
Interesting note, too!
Best wishes, Peter

Oswietlenie jakies takie nietypowe. Cien na pierwszym planie i punktowy reflektor na gwiazde ;-) Piekne ostre zdjecie. Podoba mi sie cale prezentacja z dodatkami. Habitat bardzo fajny ;-)
Pozdrawiam

Excellent shot of this little Tiger Beetle!
I don't think we have them in England but we're going to Spain in May, would they have them there?
Superb POV showing the long-legs, dimpled carapace and massive eye really clearly.
Excellent sharpness and detail.
The colours are really nice!
Well done Radomir,
Joe

Hi Radomir

Great capture of this impressive specimen; and good to see you back here.
Good sharpness and DOF.

Chris

Hello Radomir,
what a perfect macro shot of one of beetles of your group. Excellent details and sharp focus. POV and composition great. Nicely framed. I like especially informative notes, they are also great. thanks for sharing and information. friendly
Ahmet

Hi Radomir.
You have pictured a very nice specimen of the beetle with perfect details and sharpness. As usual your note is a small scientific work. Thanks. Flash work is not the best and I do not know why you have used spot metering mode. Composition is great and colour palette is so suitable for this impressive creature. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.
P.S. I am touched with your grandiose comments to my last pictures.
By the way. I'll start a photo story from ferry line Ilyichevsk – Poti.

Hi Radek

Nice to see another great addition to your already impressive tiger-beetle saga, my friend :)
This is another excellent macro - showing this species with super sharp details and impressive textures.
The flash work is again very good and it brings out the best in this little cute fellow :)

I also had a look over you paper on Albania's tiger-beetles.
Looking at the 4 species you have there once next to the other, i saw just how little the differences were between them...impressive. I guess they are very difficult to name when you begin learning them :))
Anyway, nice work and presentation!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Radomir
As stunning a picture as your previous posts of the species, and as interesting and superb as the others. I like the sharp crisp details and the fantastic POV, DOF, shadows and composition.
Magnificent job!

Hi Radek,
A nice capture of this beautiful tiger beetle. Very good light work and excellent details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Radomir,
a Tiger beetle from Butrinti, great. This time the quality of the note beats the picture. That is really intresting, the history of systematics, seen for a group of animals. Whenever new species of animals or plants are discovered the question arises: how about new species of parasites in them? Thanks for the "food for thought"!
My best regards to you, Radomir
