The Southern Festoon (Zerynthia polyxena) is a striking butterfly belonging to the Papilionidae family of butterflies with a winspan of 60-80mm. Its flight time is from April to June in a single brood.
The larvae of Z. Polyxena are yellowish with fleshy spikes all over the body. They feed on Birthworts (Aristolochia sp.).

Hallo Jan
This is sensational. This image is jam-packed with lots and lots of beautiful details to appreciate. A delightful feast to the eye. I cannot but sing my praises here, as not only is the photography superb, the butterfly itself is a stunner. The markings and patterns are displayed with perfect clarity and preciseness. What I see in front of me, is a piece of work of art and it actually looks as if each line on this insect wings have been painted by hand. Thanks for sharing this beauty.
Have a lovely weekend.
Best regards

Hi Jan,
I discover your site with pleasure. You caught this Festoon very very well, Jan. The stark contrast due to direct sunlight is not a problem and you got all the splendid colors and detail. And you were in Albania!

Best regards

A finely formed beautiful Zerynthia specimen captured in a detail revealing open-wing stance Jan, the diagonal composition greatly increases the aesthetical value of this image, TFS indeed!

Hello Jan,
It's so great You're here again, my Friend. I remember Your beautiful fungi photos from the past and I missed You. Very good to see Your new work, for example about this specie, which was common in the past in my home country, Hungary, but became quite rare for now, in the latest decades.
Nice shot, tfs. Have a nice weekend, respectfully Yours, László

Beutifull specie, I think one of most beautifull in Europe. You captured it very well with all colours well visible, good details and perfect exposure. Lucky man! Albania seems to be nice holiday destination, what do you think?
