Melitaea phoebe.

Melitaea phoebe (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Knapweed Fritillary
Mélitée des centaurées
Doncella mayor

Subfamily: Heliconiinae
Family: Nymphalidae

Wingspan 44 - 48 mm.

The refreshing coolness after a thunderstrom rain was a good chance for extended camera shootings with patiently sitting and basking butterflies like this one. To finish the series of Melitaea phoebe, here comes the upper sides of wings, seen from a rather conventional point of view.

In those meadows vibrant with life, a party of Aphids can also be seen here sitting on the same plant.

“Aphids, also known as greenfly, blackfly or plant lice, are minute plant-feeding insects in the superfamily Aphidoidea in the homopterous division of the order Hemiptera. (...) About 4,000 species of aphids are known, classified in 10 families. Aphids are distributed world-wide, but they are most common in temperate zones. It is possible for aphids to migrate great distances (mainly through passive dispersal riding on winds).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphid

Hello Peter,
Great to have such sharp and comprehensive views of the Knapweed Fritillary: it is the next best thing to seeing the butterfly out in the wild and for one like me that has never seen it in the wild your posts featuring this species are much appreciated.
Once again a fine sharp capture showing the upperside of the wings in excellent detail from a fine POV.
Thanks again!
Best wishes, Ivan

What a marvellous capture and beautiful shot, Peter! I love its colors and outstandindg composition.
Wonderful crisp details on the beautiful pattern of the Phoebe. And thanks for mentioning the presence of the aphids, I wouldn't have notice them! ;)
Congratulations and TFS

A truly beautiful capture of this extremely attractive butterfly, Peter.
The aphids sticking to the stem of the plant are also clearly visible despite their small size.
A great image and I thank you for sharing it.
Best regards.

Guten Abend Peter,

This is an outstanding butterfly post with exceptional colors and details. Exposure is perfect and the composition of main photo and workshop photos is excellent. The detail on your workshop photos is impressive.

Hi Peter,
A great picture!
I like so much your POV and the pose of the butterfly catched.
The sharpness of the image is quite impressive, as usual!
It's so enjoyable the colours and patterns seen on their wings, they're so beautiful.
I like very much the composition made and the nicely blurred background that really stands up the subject.

Hello Peter,
This is a lovely "Mélitée des centaurées" and you caught it nicely. He stands out of the smooth background.
The "+++" : composition, nice subject, pose with wings well open, rear POV, colors, sharpness, DOF, blurred BG, light & exposure, instructive complementary note with the french name ;-)
The "-" : nothing...
Congratulations my friend and thanks for sharing this beauty.

Hi Peter

Such a splendid butterfly shot and really symbolizes the full power and joy of spring.
I really love all the amazing details that you present this lovely species with - all those sharp textures and great patterns look terrific!
The DOF here is simply impeccable - keeping the butterfly in full-focus and everything else in the BG completely blurred.
The exposure is spot-on and that gave the photo all the correct and well saturated colors, too.
All-in-all: a splendor!

Hi Peter
Beautiful photo of beautiful butterfly. Great buckgrund color. Very good sharpnes. Informative note and aphids as a bonus :-)

Hallo Peter,
