Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Family: Nymphalidae

Wingspan: 55 – 70 mm

Next to the similar Pandoriana pandora of southern and southwestern Europe, Argynnis paphia is one of the largest species of fritillaries in Europe. Widespread and common, it is a typical butterfly of Summer in deciduous forests and parks at lower elevations, often to be seen in large numbers, visiting flowers.

So it was not at all a rare occasion to capture two females in different poses, demonstrating the upper sides of wings as well as the even more colourful undersides with their silvery stripes.

The species shows some clearly visible sexual dimorphism. The males have bright orange coloured scales and pronounced dark veins on the upper side of the forewings. These veins are covered with scenting scales, obviously to attract females by chemical signals in addition to visual ones.

The females of A. paphia show a clearly different appearance. They do not have the broad dark veins on the forewings, the dark spots however are more extended. The wing colour is not a bright orange, it is shaded and sometimes even tends towards greyish green.

The species inhabits open forests and edges of woodland all over Europe, Ireland, the UK (with the exception of Scotland, northern Scandinavia, and the southern Iberian peninsula). Butterflies emerge in June or July and can be observed in one extended generation until the end of September.

Caterpillars feed on the leaves of violets (Viola). Bearing in mind the diet of caterpillars, we might regard those Silver washed Fritillaries as “violets on wings”.

Hi Peter.
Next your fantastic (not only in its beauty) picture. Even in studio it is difficult (or impossible) to create such amazing composition. The back light is tremendous too. It creates a very expressive esthetic effect. BG is the separate story. Its colour tones highlights your main subject extremely well. You are great creator, dear Peter. Superb work. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hello Peter, what a surprising and wonderful composition. Amazing that you got both butterflies sharp with only F4! Unless the difficult light you got all detail sharp. Great work, Jacob

Hello Peter,
This is a real photographic performance! Two Silver-washed Fritillaries som distance apart and good focus despite the low aperture. Not only that: the lighht is not easy but has given you fantatstic tones against a superb nearal BG.
You should enter this in a nature photographer's competition!
Well done!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Peter,
You're very lucky to capture them both at the same time.
Nice vibrant colors.
Great work.

Wow, what a delightful capture, Peter! The light plays a magical role in this fabulous shot, highlighting some of the features of these two beautiful butterflies in the most attractive manner.
Thanks for sharing this masterpiece of a picture and with warm regards,

Guten Abend Peter,

Sometimes we thank GOD for good things in our lives, you should thank DOF for this splendid shot :)
Nice work, not only DOF is good, but light was very well handled, and it was not easy. Congratulations.

Hi Peter,
Fantastic shot, with beautiful composition and excellent use of light. Amazing that you got such an extended DOF using f4. Technically superb but moreover, the shot has an artistic value that is beyond comment.
Well captured and TFS

Hallo Peter,

Peter,

Looks like Vienna is European Capitol of Butterflies ;-) Another great photo from you. Lovely moment with side and back views. I like composition, details and light which made leaves semitransparent. Very interesting post!

Well, my friend...you did it again ;)
This is really a rare and spectacular capture! Both angles in the same time!...amazing!
The fosud and DOF here are most impressive an deven more surprising is that you used only f/4.
The light is equaly great making all the colors and element glitter.
Very well composed, too.
Bravo and TFS

Beautiful compostion Peter
Great DOF adds to the effect
Great sharpness and lighting effect
Great work

Chris

excellent light color and composition.
Unfocused green plants would have been better than an uniform grey background. Weel nothing to do about it. It is a small nit anyway.
Fantastic capture.

Hi Peter,
WOW! to get two of them in the same frame with each in a distinct and different pose is excellent. The backlighting is beautiful here. Great composition and framing. Great detail and a superb OOF backround. Really supeb camera work on this one. BEAUTIFUL!

Cheers!!!
Ricardo

The first impression that caused me when seeing it is that existed a slight over exposure, but when observing in detail, I saw the colors and contrasts, the luminous areas and in shade so wonderful that the illumination transformed in one of the strong points of this composition dear friend.
The beauty of the butterflies in all their splendor, enhanced by the perfect focus and sharpness on both, added to the collaboration of the perfect bottom, they conform an imposing piece of your talent behind your Sony.
Great point of view, great framing.... Cheers!!!
Ricardo

Well done Peter.
Excellent job of getting both subjects in..
Good control of the light with nice backlighting. Great detail and an interesting compositional duet :)
Have a great week mf.
PS - I've had terrible internet strength the last 5 days. Can't upload either..Tornados in the Atlanta Georgia area have messed up my satellite internet "hub" for now :(

Hi, Peter.
Two in one - good catch. Nice light and compo. With DSLR you don't get such DOF with 4.0. Nice BG. looks great.

Hi Peter

Wow, wow, and wow. How much do you pay these butterflies for such an amazing pose? The best of all possible shots with a top view and a side view all in one.

I like this fine composition, rich and well saturated colours, crisp details, superb BG, and the amazing backlight the stream through the insects and the plants.

Very good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Sorry for the short critique, but I’m having problems again with the cellulites and cannot sit at the PC for long.

Hi Peter,
