Deilephila elpenor (Linnaeus, 1758)
An unexpected but very welcome visitor to the little garden in front of our home, this pretty hawkmoth was resting there in the morning, and staying there for the whole day, waiting for the night to return in order to take off and start hovering in front of flowers open at nighttime, again.
Deilephila elpenor is quite common in central Europe and distributed throughout the palearctic region. It is nocturnal and therefore feeding on flowers that open or produce nectar at nighttime. It is living in a variety of habitats, including grassland, heathland, sand dunes, hedgerows, woodland, urban gardens. Playing an important role in pollination throughout their habitats.
Wing span: approximately 60mm.
The Elephant Hawkmoth's common name in English is derived from the caterpillar's resemblance to an elephant's trunk. Caterpillars are feeding on a variety of plants such as rosebay willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium), bedstraws (Galium sp.). Moths are also frequently attracted to gardens, laying their eggs on fuchsias, dahlias, lavender.
Flight time: June to September.
