Dostojka pales
Perlovec vysokohorský
Perleťovec vysokohorský

Genus: Boloria
Family: Nymphalidae
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Order: Lepidoptera
Class: Insecta
Phylum: Arthropoda
Kingdom: Animalia

Wingspan: 35 – 40mm

When you walk up alpine meadows above the range of forests in summer you will meet this quick moving, sun loving little fritillary that loves to sit on a rock or a flower to spread its wings to the sun, and immediately seeks shelter when clouds arrive.

This one was taken during a descent from the slopes of Grossglockner, at an elevation of about 2400m, with a rapidly approaching thunderstorm darkening the sky.

Please click here to see the upperside of wings.

Distribution: Austrian, Bavarian, Italian and Swiss Alps, Tatra, the High Carpatians, from 2200m to 2700m above sea level. June to August in one generation.

Caterpillars feed on Viola calcarata.

The plant:

Aconitum napellus (Linnaeus 1753)
Monk’s Hood, Wolf’s Bane,

Genus: Aconitum
Family: Ranunculaceae
Order: Ranunculales
Class: Magnoliopsida
Division: Magnoliophyta
Kingdom: Plantae

Species: A. napellus

An extremely poisonous herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1 m tall, with hairless stems and leaves. The flowers are dark purple to bluish-purple, narrow oblong helmet-shaped, 1-2 cm tall, native and endemic to western and central Europe. Plants native to Asia and North America formerly listed as A. napellus are now regarded as separate species.

Extremely poisonous, the plant generates enough cardiac poison to be used to tip spears and arrows for hunting and battle in ancient times, also earning A. napellus its name.

Aconite is a medicine in homeopathy.

Hallo Peter,
die Bildgestaltung gefaellt mir sehr gut, schon allein von der Farbkombination und der tollen Perspektive. Finde auch der Schaerfeverlauf und die klaren Details erwaehnenswert.
Klase Arbeit.

Hello Peter,
This is a fine close and detailed capture of a species of fritillary that I have never seen before.
The contrast between it and the Monk's hood flower is striking to say the least and the BG is superb.
Thanks for introducing me to this one in such a fine way!
Best wishes, Ivan

Guten Abend Peter,

Hi Peter,
I like texture in wings and colours both in butterfly and flower. Excellent exposure, sharpness, composition and background. A post very well complemented with top view and the WS.

Another beautiful post Peter with great colors and contrast with the bottom like strong points of the image.
Viewing the workshop with the complete scene, really I don't know which is more beautiful, since it competes the flower aesthetically with the butterfly, enhanced with the achieved out of focus.
Excellent idea the inclusion of the second workshop with the view of the butterfly with the extended wings.
Bravo my fried!

Hello Peter,
This is a nice and smart composition for this lovely butterbly.
The "+" : subject, point of view, sharpness, DOF, colors, blurred BG, exposure, instructive note...
The "-" : nothing...
Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

I don't know where you find all these beautiful butterflies, Peter.
Another beauty that is not often seen on TN or elsewhere.
I love the "hairiness" of this insect, which is presented in fantastic sharpness.
The colors are warm and shown in perfect exposure.
TFS. : )

A stunningly beautiful image, Peter. Two diametrically opposed colours of the flower and the butterfly combine into an extremely pleasing composition.
Superb POV and DOF. The details and colours on the wings are unbelievably lively and vibrant.
Thanks for sharing this amazing picture.

Hi Peter
Beautiful photo of these shy frittilary. Perfect sharpnes great OOF buckground and blue flower as a special bonus in composition
Best wishes

Hi my friend
From the thumbnail I noticed the blue color
So this brown fritillary is more beautiful on this blue plant and the grey BG gives details and more more points. Thanks for the excellent note too
Sorry for the only 2 points but I cant give 10
TFS and see you

Hi Peter

Another fantastic post from you!
This is a great macro and i simply love all the razor sharp details here - especially the hairs on the butterfly's head and wings.
The idea to post a workshop with the upper view of the wings is great and very educative, too.
The colors here are another strong element and they are most charming and vivid.
A superb composition and a wonderful informative note.
Bravo and TFS, my friend!

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter.
Your set of pictures is excellent. Each of them is worthy special attention. Amazing smooth colour tone range, outstanding composition and tremendous details and sharpness.

Sorry, I have no time. I have just returned from short business trip and hasten for work.

Hi Peter,
This is extraordinary in terms of visual impact!
I like a lot the bright and intense colors, both in the fllower and on the insect.
You got a such good razorsharp and clear details...it's amazing the way the wings structure can be admired.
Wonderful the effect created in the background by DOF.
Well done on the PP side.
I have a curiosity, why did you use the Sony camera?
Congratulations, thanks for share and best regards,

Hi Peter

You must be ‘joking’, no? Shucks, no tripod (so hand held at 1/200 shutter speed), more than 50% cropped, and only slightly sharpened…This is truly and absolutely a magnificent piece of macro work worth a couple of WOW’s my friend. There is so much detail locked in this shot, such sharp features in this one photo that you could probably lend some of it to other less fortunate or experienced photographers without even missing some of it (chuckle). The colours are superb, the BG is remarkable, and the exposure management and usage of available light was out-of-the-books.

Superb work my friend and TFS.
