Albulina orbitulus (de Prunner, 1798).

Alpine Argus, Alpine Blue
Heller Alpenbläuling
Azuré de la phaque

Genus: Albulina
Family: Lycaenidae
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Order: Lepidoptera
Class: Insecta
Phylum: Arthropoda
Kingdom: Animalia

Wingspan: 25 – 30mm

Austrian, Bavarian, French, Italian and Swiss Alps on mountain meadows from 1000m to 3000m. Mountains of southern Norway and Sweden, from 800m to 1200m. Southern Ural. Prefers wet spots between rocks on steep sunny slopes with rich vegetation.

One generation from June to August.

Caterpillars feed on Astragalus alpinus.

The capture was taken on a sunny day at an elevation of approximately 2500 meters near a rocky well, when the shadow of clouds was passing my path causing the numerous butterflies on the mountain meadow to seek shelter from the sudden cold. The path was leading from the village of Kals to the alpine cottage of Stuedlhuette and to the peak of Grossglockner in the Tyrol.

Hi Peter,
Extremely good details of this small and very hairy butterfly. It seem dressed for mountains! Lovely colors, texture and exposure.
Best regards, José M.

Guten Abend Peter,

Hello Peter,
The last time I saw and photographed this species was in the Austrian Alps, but that was before I became 'digital'.
This is a fine capture of the U/S in a natural setting.
We have this species in Sweden, where it is rare in the mts.
TFS this one mf,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Peter,,

Hallo Peter,
Very nice composition of this butterfly on the green. I have only seen them on cowdroppings so this looks better.
The details on this butterfly are stunning. Good focus and very nice colours.
TFS Paula

Hi Peter.
Magnificent macro. The butterfly is really outside of the monitor (and picture). This effect has created, I thing, by scenery (top and bottom sharp leaves on the FG at one side and remote blurred leaves on the BG at another), by DOF, by colours and by POV. This separation is very expressive. I like the fluffy costume of the butterfly very much. Excellent work by skilful tailor. I also like the pleasant soft lighting and restrained colours. They are suitable for your small beauty. Superb done and my best wishes.

Hello Peter,
WOW, what a closeup. Beautiful fine detail, colors and composition. Magnificent.

Hello again, Peter:
I haven't been around for some time, and it's nice to discover this new posting from you. Just about everything has already been said about this photograph, and I particularly appreciate that you have been very gentle with the sharpening, as I don't think images of lycaenids "like" it. I will always think of this species as the Alpine Blue rather than Argus, as the males are very bright. They seem to be very thirsty little insects, too ;)
Thanks for this. Nigel.

Hallo Peter,
klasse hast du den festgehalten. Herrliche Schaerfe bis ins feinste Detail. Eine schoene horizontale Bildgestaltung mit passendem Schaerfeverlauf. Schoen ist die Farbenkombination und auch die Farben des Falter.
Klasse Aufnahme.

Hi Peter

A fabulous shot of this little guy with his fashionably striped designer tackies. The brilliant butterfly looks absolutely life-like and ready to fly off to another perch at any moment so I’m typing this critique very carefully so I don’t alarm the insect and then cause it to vamoose.

A beautiful composition with exceptional colour and details. Every little feature of the butterfly is recognisable. A complimentary and very OOF BG with perfect exposure gives this posting a wonderful edge.

Good work and TFS.

Hi Peter

A lovely clear shot with a high quality result. Excellent camera work. TFS.

Cordiales saludos... Ricardo

Beautiful butterfly Peter with intense colors but that for their "coat" they always confuse the focus of the image.
I like the point of view and correct OOF although the depth could have been lightly bigger.
Suitable illumination and election of the framing complete another interesting post.
Regards... Ricardo
