Maniola jurtina (Linnaeus, 1758)

Meadow Brown
Grosses Ochsenauge
Bruin zandoogje
La Loba
Przestrojnik jurtina
Očkáň lúčny
Okáč luční
Stort Okseřje
Çayır esmeri

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Maniolus

Wing span 40 – 52 mm.

Common and wide spread, the Meadow Brown inhabits most parts of Europe south of 63° latitude, northwest Africa, Turkey, temperate Asia to West Siberia, from the lowlands up to 1600m.

It is a well known species, but three things remain to be mentioned as remarkable.

The species shows considerable sexual dimorphism – males and females look so much different in size, pattern, and coloration, that they may be taken for two different species. Males are much smaller, and less conspicuous with uppersides of wings dark brown all over, with the exception of a small eyespot on each forewing.

To see the differences more clearly, please click

>>> here.

Females are considerably larger, and more conspicuous because they are more colourful with large orange spots around their well developed eye spots. At most butterflies where sexes look different, males are the ones that look conspicuous while females go for camouflage. Females looking more conspicuous than males goes together with the rather unusual courting behaviour of Maniola jurtina where females are the active ones flying around in search for males.

In this picture of a happy couple the female is the one on top.

The butterflies can be seen flying in one extended generation from the end of May into September. It seems remarkable that even in the southern area of its distribution such as the Mediterranean islands, Maniola jurtina does not appear much earlier than in other parts of Europe, and it does not have a second generation.

Caterpillars feed on various grasses: Poa pratensis, Lolium pratense, Festuca rubra, Bromus erectus, etc.

Hi Peter,
Beautiful colours, very nice light, perfect focus, the best pov and pose and a really wonderful natural background with a nice colour and the exact proportion of oof.
Best regard mf,
José M.

Nice moment, well captured, with nice colours and lovely BG. The moody tones on the buterflies are elegant. I would try with shadow and highlights to lower a bit the stronger lights at the beautiful BG, but as always a question of taste.
Nice shot, well done.

Hello Peter,
Very well captured in spite of the difficult light. Excellent details and very nice colours and a beautiful composition.
TFS and rgards, Ulla

Hello Peter!
I had some break in writing comments to your picture but now is the weekend so a little more time to do it :)
This is another very good presentation. In every single case I can learn a lot about the butterfly species which is presented by you.
And now a few words about this picture ;>
Here we have a good quality photo with good details, nice POV and DOF. I like also the BG wich allow to better expose the specimens "in copula".
The only thing which I would like to change are some white reflections on the top of flower.
Anyway, another interesting presentation!
TFS and all the best,

bonjour peter
ça c'est une belle position, certe reservé aux insectes car pour nous ce serait vraiment tres dur.bon la je m'egare.
magnifique en tous points.

Hi peter,

I belive i should learn whats sharpness in macro looking at this pic,Amazing details in such lighting. Picture perfect as elders say is true on this one.

Tfs & happy weekend.

What a bright color palette displayed here, Peter.
A very beautiful image indeed due to the colours but also due to the exellent sharpness. The butterflies are both razor sharp.
Great job.

Hi Peter.
Bravo, my dear friend. What a charming sea of lights and paints. Amazing lighting and wonderful BG. Delicacy of colours and color passages are really great as well as the outstanding separation of main subject from BG, terrific sharpness and details of the plant and flowers, and expressive composition. Great artistic work. My compliments and heart greetings.
Yours Alexei.

Hello Peter,
Have you started on a series of Maniola now? No, I'm joking.
The female Meadow Brown in this fine sharp shot is unusually colourful, with lovely shades of rusty red. They have much plainer undersides in Sweden. Nice blurred meadow BG that just allows us to see that you have not rotated the shot to give the fine diagonal comp of the flower stalk.
Very fine summer shot!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Peter
Excellent shot of these Meadow Browns,
Perfect sharpness and colors,
Great POV, Welldone.

The synergy between these two is quite manifest in the shapely formation they have adopted holding on to the same branch, Peter.
The furry wings and subdued colours of these butterflies are beautifully captured in this shot.
Best regards,

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
Perfect moment,
Beautiful compo,
I like the POV,sharpness and details a lot.
Well done.

Hi Peter

Another SPLENDID post from you, my friend!
This is really a wonderful macro!
I love the contrast with the BG here a lot and the very carefull and precise balance between the shadows and highlights here. Although the butterflies have a backlight, they are still presented with great sharpness and superb colors. I also like the tones of the BG, too.
The conposition is again great and i realyl liked the WS picture...i didn't know which was the difference between the males and females of this species...so again a very aducational post! :)

Cheers, my friend and TFS

Another excellent and pedagogic post my friend not only for the original image but also for the workshop and your always interesting notes.
Great capture showing this mating inside a beautiful composition technically and aesthetically very appropriate.
The pleasant light effect allows to appreciate the textures of the butterfly and its hanger with total clarity.
Enclosed DOF allows the fitting focus and at the same time a great diffusion of the background that collaborates with the aesthetics of the presentation.

hello peter
wonderful macro working on this beautiful butterflies. coupling composition, point of view, background, depth of field, colours, details and note are great

Hello Peter,

Absolutely stunning capture of two beautiful butterflies sharing intimate moments! The composition is very efficient with the two subjects showing us their profile against a beautiful blurred background. The blurred yellow flower in the background adds a touch of color to your shot!
Exposure is seamless as usual and the soft tangent light rendered great textures in the butterflies' wings. I know you don't use fill flash and am still amazed by the excellent exposure of the details in the shadows, even if you used the fill flash tool.
The excellent brown hues in the wings make a nice contrast with the bright green background thus drawing attention to the subjects. They are very well isolated from everything else. The perspective is enhanced by the distant spot of blue sky in the background. Outstanding work of art! And technically perfect! Very well done with very useful notes! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,

What beautiful play with light and dark. And these two Ochsenaugen oblivious to the shimmer and shine about them
as they "hang on"...

Hi Peter,
Great capture of this "intimate" moment!
It's very good the POV and the close approach to show us this busy couple.
Excellent the way you handled the light with the exposition.
I like a lot the composition made with the yellow accent at the top.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
