Lilium martagon (L.)

Martagon, Turk’s cap lily, Türkenbund, Krollilja, Varjolilja, Петров кръст, Лилия кудреватая, Lilie zlatohlavá, Lilia złotogłów, lirio llorón o bozo, il Giglio martagone, le lis martagon …

“… has a widespread native region extending from central Europe east through northern Asia to Mongolia and Korea. Several subspecies have been named. The plant is stem-rooting, growing between 1 m and 2 m tall. The flower colour is typically a pink-purple, with dark spots, but is quite variable, extending from near white to near black. The flowers are scented. Numerous flowers are borne on each plant, and up to 50 can be found on vigorous plants.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilium_martagon

That spectacular lily has become rare in most places. With active conservation and protection of nature it seems to be spreading again.

Wing span: 38 - 42mm.

Erebia euryale can be met in mountain forests of the Pyrenees, the Auvergne, the Alps and southeastern European mountains, Ural, and Altai, but not Fennoscandia. Rather common at elevations between 1200m and 2000m, going down to 750m and up to 2500m. In Alpine valleys, Erebia euryale can often be seen at the same locations as Erebia ligea. To clearly identify those two species it needs at least one close look at both the upper and the undersides of wings.

Butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation in July and August. Caterpillars feed on various species of grass (Festuca ovina, Poa nemoralis, etc.)

The picture was taken from a few meters distance while leaning over a wooden fence near the village of Vent at an elevation of 1900m. The fence is there to keep cattle away from stepping into the meadows. I did not dare to leave the hiking trail, too, and avoided to climb over the fence and to step into that marvellous meadow. There are mountains meadows that have been cleared from trees and cut once a year for making hay probably since about 4000 years. These alpine meadows are showing a tremendous variety of flowers in blossom – and insects – by the end of mountain spring early in July. Let us hope that local farmers will keep doing their hard work resisting the modern temptation to make more money with running hotels and restaurants for skiers and hikers.

composizione eccezionale sia per la varietà dei soggetti raffigurati sia per la qualità degli stessi soggetti. Peccato per la poca luce che avrebbe dato quel tocco in più alla foto, ma è tutto comunque ben bilanciato sia per quanto riguarda i colori sia per ciò che attiene la messa a fuoco. E sono proprio i colori a farla da padrone in questa bella cornice partendo dai vividi colori dei fiori alle tonalità più neutre della piccola Euryale.
Interessanti come sempre le note che ci presenti.

It's not often you see butterflies visiting a Lily but this little Ringlet seems to like them and they're certainly wonderful flowers!

Lieber Peter,
Kaum war ich am Computer, tauchte schon Dein Bild auf..und wieder eine Kombination von Raritäten. Du scheinst wohl immer am richtigen Ort zu sein. Der Türekenbund ist auch bei uns nur noch selten zu sehen, man muss wissen wo. Und Deine Gedanken über die Alpenwiesen sind wohl berechtigt. Habe ich doch kürzlich gelesen, dass im Schweizer Alpenraum 50 Resorts (z.B Andermatt) geplant sind!!
So erfreue ich mich doppelt an Deinem leichten und beschwingten Bild.

A fine capture both of euryaleand the Lily flowers, the the two taken from a nice POV with excellent sharpness in a pleasing composition against a nice neutral Bg. Nice to see both surfaces of the wings of euryale.
Even though we have a Swedish name for euryale it is not found in Scandinavia.

The light green blurry BG works well here, as it gives wonderful contrast to this dark colored butterfly. The sharpness and POV are perfect. The DOF is very well maintained.

Dear Peter,
A perfect presentation of a beautiful plant.

The details are outstanding - even the little insect (at 3 o'clock of the picture) is in focus!

The drop of water in the top left hand corner of the photo makes me wonder - if it is dew - or if you took the photo after it had rained.

The pattern on the fleshy stem is is interesting - probably designed to attract butterflies...

The subtle colours of the background enhance the vivid colours of the flower.
