Wing span 30 - 32mm.

The males of this species show bright golden red iridescent structural colours on the upper side of their wings, obviously a strongly developed signal for intraspecies communication between the sexes.

Females of that species look quite different being much less bright in colour and showing dark spots on the upper side of their wings.

On the undersides of wings, there is hardly any sexual dimorphism to be seen. Both sexes are well camouflaged, and they look very much the same. For a couple in copulation, please klick

Caterpillars feed on Rumex. Butterflies can be encountered from June to August in one generation.

The location:

The picture was taken early in the morning with the first rays of sunshine reaching the mountain meadows of Rofen in the Tyrol at an elevation of approximately 2050m above sea level in the highest parts of the Oetztal Valley, near the village of Vent.

Great photo Peter!
Looks very similar to some kind of Lycaenidae that exists in Portugal.
The POV shows us the usual land with down head.
Good DOF, colours and details!
5* and TFS!

Superb point of view, Peter!
I like the colours and patterns on the wings of this butterly.
TFS and take care.

Nice macro with great colours and details. Very well done and TFS.

Hallo Peter,
