Colias palaeno (Linnaeus, 1761)

Moreland Clouded Yellow, Hochmoor-Gelbling, Veengeeltje, Svavelgul höfjäril, Myrgulvinge, Mose Hosommerfugl, Suokeltaperhonen, Szlaczkoń torfowiec, Žltáčik čučoriedkový, Žluťásek borůvkový, Solitaire …

Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Coliadinae

Wingspan: 40 – 50 mm.

Hiking in alpine regions above the treeline, you might have the chance to notice that strikingly colourful, fast flying butterfly.

Male butterflies show bright lemon yellow wings, females show white scales instead of yellow ones on the upperside of wings. Both sexes show strongly contrasting broad black borders on the uppersides of wings, green eyes, and crimson fringes on wings, crimson legs, and antennae.

One of my favourite butterflies for its beauty, Colias palaeno is rather hard to capture. It is a deliberate and quick flier, patrolling a large area in search of the opposite sex, and very wary. So you have to be quite lucky to be able to get within the optimal macro-shooting distance of less than 30cm.

With generally low air temperatures in altitudes above 2000m, the sudden shadow of a passing cloud is always offering such a chance. You just have to follow one of those quick fliers seeking immediate shelter somewhere in low vegetation.

Distribution: North America, Sachalin, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Siberia, Europe from 47° to 70° latitude, as far west as Vosges, and French Alpes. Wide spread in its northern range, but very local in the southern parts. Quuite common still in Scandinavia, the species is a relic of ice ages that hase become extinct in many parts of central Europe through the disappearance of its habitats.

Staying closely to their breeding grounds in morelands and humid locations where its caterpillar’s feeding plants Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium myrtillus exist, the Moreland Clouded Yellow may still be seen locally from June to August. But those small isolated colonies in central European mountain regions are considered to be "severely endangered" (Red List for Austria and Germany).

Hello Peter,
A fine sharp capture of a male Colias palaeno with a little bit missing on the edge of the forewing, which provides a small window to see a small part of the upper surface that it only shows in flight. The lighting, partially shining through the forewings, is great and the grey Bg makes a fine contrast. You were skillful to come so close: I find this species difficult to approach even with my long lens!
In Sweden it is still found where there are boglands but it has become less common during recent years. I am surprised that it can occur at over 2000m in the Alps.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Have a good weekend,

Ciao peter, superb macro of wonderful colias with fantastic colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Peter
This is new species of Colias for me. I have seen only 3-4 species from this genus. you nicely captured this beautiful butterfly. focus, POV, exposure and composition very nice. colors also superb. thanks for sharing, best wishes

wonderful details and spot on exposure peter, the black dot in the eye is special. WRT to composition this picture is so "un-peter" like :-), usually your pictures have breathing space, but here the picture is too bold, any reason for this composition?

Very good detail of the subject. I like the sharpness and POV also. Your composition, DOF and BG are all great!

Lieber Peter,

Vielen Dank !

Hi Peter!

Another perfect post! This macro looks great, with high quality and interesting subject, but I must say, that I like more your workshop picture. This landscape is simply breathtaking, I envy you such place to hunt :-) Both workshop pictures, your main picture and note made together superb post.

Hi Peter,
An excellent macro capture of this pretty Colias species with fine composition and and neat details. Today i gone outside to test my new lens (Micro-Nikkor 105 VR) and i encountered with a Large Tortoiseshell on the ground. When i searched the TN i found your shot of the species. i noticed that its shots were uploaded by you and Rimas only. Tomorrow please wait a surprise from me:)
TFS and cheers!

Perfect exposure and wonderful detail.
Nicely composed with good colour.

Hello Peter!
I was not in your gallery so long... and now I see that a lot of interesting captures were overlooked by me during this days.

Great, so yellow butterfly! I Poland this species is critically endangered, and like in Germany and Austria placed on the Red List. I had no oportunity to observe it in the wild till now.

Congratulations and best greetings from Lodz!

Lieber Peter!

Hi Peter,

The color of this butterfly is so beautiful with pink trimming around the sides. I like the way you captured it with matching compound eye that is so well focused. Nicely controlled depth in producing this top drawer image.

Thanks for sharing and have a beautiful day.
Best regards,

Hola Peter,

Hi, dear Peter.
Fantastic shot executed at your firm style. POV and composition of the image cannot be better. However, the key point of the picture is brilliant reproduction of the tiniest details of the butterfly. Texture of the wings, hair of the body. Eye, antennas and legs is reflected with great exactness. Especially I like light pattern on the wings. It is very attractive. Simply BG is smoothed perfectly and supplements the image of the beautiful insect very well. Superb photo. My kind wishes and compliments.
P.S. Unfortunately, I am very busy these days and cannot visit TN when I wish.

Hello Peter,
this is a great macro. Your works strongly impress by the high quality of the technology of performance and by artistry. After looking many your works, I obtained great pleasure.

You've struck gold with this one. A super sharp, well focused and excellently composed image. The colours are fabulous, the detail super and the closeness overwhelming. I cannot say more! Thanks for sharing.

Hello Peter
Just perfect shot - as always ;-)
Nothing more to comment ;-D

Lieber Peter,
