Euphydryas cynthia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Cynthia`s Fritillary
Witbonte parelmoervlinder
Damier des alpages

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae
Wing span: 35 – 45mm

An endemite of the European Alps, Euphydryas cynthia is a lucky encounter whenever you come to see it during a mountain trip high up above the forest line.

After having shown the even more conspicuous male before, here is a female seen when sucking nectar from glacier crowfoot -

“Ranunculus glacialis, the glacier crowfoot or glacier buttercup, is a plant of the family Ranunculaceae. It is an arctic-alpine species, found in the high mountains of southern Europe (Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, Sierra Nevada) as well as on the Scandinavian peninsula, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Jan Mayen, Svalbard and eastern Greenland. It is by many accounts the highest ascending plant in the Alps …” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranunculus_glacialis)

Taken at an elevation of 2700m on the hiking trail from Tiefenbach glacier to Vent, Oetztal, Tyrol.

Hello Peter,

Impressive shot of the Cynthia Fritillary from a interesting POV! The sharpness and DOF is well managed. The colors of the butterfly are at their best though the colors of the flower are bit overexposed due to the usage of flash but it hardly matters here. Your powerful and colorful subject overpowers this minute problem. Very well seen!

Thanks for posting.

PS: Thanks for your kind remarks on my picture about Moroccan Meadow Brown. As I am not expert in this field, therefore it I can't reply to your question about its migration to central Germany :) Infact, I looked in the web for the species with similar looks, and only I could able to conclude that it may be M.Meadow Brown. Thanks again for stopping by.

Hello again, Peter
How low can you go? ;) It's nice to see an alternative viewpoint, and not easy to do. The flash contribution makes the image look a little surreal, but I like it!
Best wishes, Nigel.

Saludos: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Peter,

This is a superb shot with brilliant coloration, sharpness & fine details. The POV is striking & just done with great care.

Thanks for your efforts & sharing!

Hello Peter!
I could recognise that this was your shot before I saw the name! A great way to see the underside of a female E. cynthia taken with technical perfection in fine lighting and nicely composed on the ranunculus flower against a pleasing OOF mountain and sky Bg.
Thanks for sharing this delight!
Best regards,

A splendid shot, Peter! I love the unique POV you've chosen which is so very effective!

He Peter,

Superb use of the flashbulb and great dominate of the against light.

Special congratulations because of the POV, is frankly original and me likes the result.

Good colors, very balanced work.

Greetings & TFS!

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter,
A different and very nice perspective of cynthia using the flash to highlight the underside. Beautiful details and colours of butterfly and flower that stand out against the natural background.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

It is, indeed, a great pleasure to see and appreciate your outstanding nature photography, Peter. Sadly, I have very little time to spare for TN in view of my current occupation.
This is a very distinct Fritillary endemic to Alps and you have captured it with your usual, highly gifted eye for aesthetics and technical excellence. The POV is unique and very appealing.
Best regards.

Hi Peter,
A nice moment to capture. The pov is great. Sharp focus with fine detail to appreciate.

Hallo Peter, schön, dass man sich hier wieder mal trifft. Lang, lang ist´s her. Deine Makroaufnahme ist ja wieder einnmal top of the top. Glückwunsch!
Lieben Gruß Rose

Hallo Peter
A real beauty, blessed with such an assortment of beautiful colours and markings, and you have captured it well to show it off. I just love the angle in which you have captured it, showing details from another viewpoint. I also like the clarity of the big black eye and the way its wings are standing upright and almost ready for lift off. It was a great pleasure stopping by this image filled with colour and happiness and joy that is written all over it. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

Verry good picture,nice colours.Well done.Regards.Alin.

hello Peter!
this capture is very well managed.......
bravo for the particular point of view and difficult situation of light.

thanks and best regards sERGIO

Hallo Peter,

Hello Peter
the focusing on the Euphydryas cynthia is perfect. Excellent the composition of colors that give a great contrast between the little butterfly and the pink flower with fine details and optimal flash light.

Hi Peter
What I like here the most is an anusual POV. Also inetresting set of colors vivid orange vs blue/grey background Very interesting photo of this beautiful butterfly
Best wishes

Hi dear Peter.
Now I have some time you continue to acquaintance with your wonderful gallery. As usual for you POV is creative and very attractive. Flash work is delicate enough and BG is well reproduced. However, the key point of the shot is charming butterfly and flower which are reflected with all their impressive details. My kind regards and warm wishes.

Hi Peter,
this one is very dramatic and superb low angle presentation. I like the effect it gives, it is not like a butterfly but it is so enormous like a stealth fighter.
Excellent presentation with special approach.
