Lake Walchsee has already been mentioned in the 14th century as “Walgsee” and “Walichsee”. The current name Walchsee derives from Roman descendants which used to be called “Wallen” or “Walchen”. The lake has become the symbol of the entire area and it is also the reason why the village is called in this way: Walchsee. Lake Walchsee is also part of the emblem of the village, illustrated as a blue wave.

With an average temperature of 24 degrees, this lake, boasting the highest water quality, is a popular excursion destination in the holiday area Kaiserwinkl. Numerous places for bathing (subject to charges) invite you to relax and enjoy. Popular activities are sailing, boating with the available paddle boats, electronic boats and pedalos as well as water skiing. The idyllic lake promenade invites you to make a pleasant walk along the lakeside. And those who aim higher can find numerous hiking destinations in the adjacent Kaiser mountain chain.

On a penisula a at the west lakeside, there is a little moor with rare plant species, among which the bog rosemary and the cranberry. Additional to this area, in the north west of the village Walchsee there is the so called “Schwemm”, which is North Tyrol’s largest moor landscape, representing the habitat for rare animal and plant species. This area is for instance the only breeding habitat for common snipes. Also the sundew, a carnivorous plant, can be found in this area. Great parts of the moor are protected since 2008 and have been declared a “Natura 2000″ area.

Der Name “Walchsee” wurde bereits im 14. Jahrhundert als Walgsee und Walichsee erwähnt, wurde aber fälschlicherweise mit Waldsee gleichgesetzt bzw. von vallis (= Tal) abgeleitet. Der Name stammt aber von den römischen Nachkommen, die altdeutsch Wallen, Walchen genannt wurden. Der See, der zum Wahrzeichen des ganzen Gebietes wurde und dem Dorf auch den Namen gab, findet sich heute auch im Dorfwappen als blaue Welle.

Mit einer Durchschnittstemperatur von 24°C ist der See in der Ferienregion Kaiserwinkl ein beliebtes und über die Grenzen hinaus bekanntes Ausflugsziel. Zahlreiche Badeplätze rund um den See laden - gebührenpflichtig - zum Baden ein. Weitere beliebte Sportarten sind Segeln, Bootfahren mit den zur Verfügung stehenden Elektro-, Tret- und Ruderbooten, und Wasserski fahren. Die idyllische Seepromenade hingegen lädt zu einem Spaziergang ein. Wer weiter gehen möchte, dem eröffnen sich in der Umgebung des Walchsees, der nahe dem Kaisergebirge liegt, unbeschränkte Wandermöglichkeiten.

Auf einer Halbinsel am Westufer des Sees hat sich bis heute ein kleiner Hochmoorkomplex mit seltenen Pflanzenarten erhalten, darunter die Rosmarinheide und die Moosbeere. Dazu kommt nordwestlich des Dorfes Walchsee die sogenannte “Schwemm”: Als größte erhaltene Moorlandschaft Nordtirols ist sie zu einem Wohnraum seltener Tier- und Pflanzenarten geworden. Hier befindet sich zum Beispiel das einzige Tiroler Brutgebiet der Bekassine, eine Art aus der Familie der Schnepfenvögel. Auch der Sonnentau, eine fleischfressende Pflanze, ist hier noch zu finden. Ein Großteil dieses Moores steht seit 2008 unter Naturschutz und ist ausgewiesenes “Natura 2000″-Gebiet…

Die Nebelschwaden teilen dein Bild in zwei mit dem oberen realen Berg und seiner Widerspiegelung im Wasser. Schöne Tyroler Landschaft, die du von einem idealen Standpunkt fotografiert hast. Kenne diese Gegend leider nicht gut.
