Brassy Ringlets.

Erebia cassioides (Reiner & Hochenwarth, 1792)
Common Brassy Ringlet
Moiré lustré

Genus: Erebia
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Family: Nymphalidae

Wing span 34 – 38 mm.

When sunlight gets reflected from the fine scales of their dark wings, ringlets often show some nice metallic lustre. But never before I have seen ringlets with such a brilliant iridescence as during my hikes in the mountains of Grossglockner in the Tyrol in August 2006.

Observed at different locations in the highest regions of Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park to the end of August, the three individuals shown here look very much like Erebia tyndarus, seen in the Oetztal valley in early July.

But Grossglockner does not belong to the area of distribution of E. tyndarus which is not exceeding Brenner to the east. And all specimens seen at Grossglockner show well visible eye spots on hindwings while E. tyndarus specimens usually show blank hindwings.

So some of those very brassy ringlets are likely to be Erebia cassioides, first described from the adjacent area of Heiligenblut in Carinthia. From all the members of the tyndarus group, Erebia cassioides is showing the widest distribution, reported from the Pyrenees, from two isolated areas of the Alps at the southwest and the east, and from the Balkan.

The species inhabits grassy spots between rocks between 1600m and 2600m, in one extended generation from July to September.

Caterpillars feed on Festuca ovina.

Underside of wings.

Grossglockner, at elevations between 2100 and 2300m. To view, please click

P.S.: As noticed by Peter Roos (batu), the specimen to the upper right might belong to the closely related species Erebia nivalis.

A larger picture of Erebia nivalis (De Lesse's Brassy Ringlet) will be posted soon.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hello Peter,
Brilliant illustration of this beautiful Ringlet! All excellent captures of the light reflecting in the scales of the wings. Great sharpness and superb colours. It seems to be seeking moisture from the ground?
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hallo Peter,

Hello Peter,
Fine collage of these beautiful Brassy Ringlets, each shot being well composed, sharp and each from a different POV to give us the angles at which the irridescence shines.
One is inspired to try to travel to these heights in Tyrol, to try to Photograph these, but there is so much happening in Sweden at that time of the year!
So its nice to see your shots instead.
Thanks and best regards, Ivan

Colors look wonderful even for a non-colorful species. The angle of reflection is showing different shapes and tones so your presentation is also great to see with different poses.
I would use thin frames between the photos but this is very good.
Also I'd like to say thanks for the excellent notes about identification and species.
TFS Peter.

Hi Peter.
What a nice and full of content notes and workshop. Very interesting and useful.
I like your obvious presentation of this beautiful specimen. All shots are taken at good POV. Their details and colours are reflected impressively. The modest BG underlines their features very well too. You have convinced me. I start to represent my unpretentious butterflies. I hope for your support. My heart wishes and TFS, dear Peter.

Hi Peter,
Excellent collage to see iridescence phenomenon depending on the sunbeams direction and pov. But what I like most in this post is the WS. It's a wow place!! A fine example of your wonderful country.

Salut Peter,
....brassy indeed! I've never seen such Erebia. It must have been a tough nut to crack, this photo, the butterfly being dark and the iridescence varying a lot.
Thank youfor showing us,
Cheers, Dietrich

Guten Abend Peter,

Hi Peter

What a remarkable and perfect contribution to TN.

This is an excellent example of a complete all-round posting. You’ve set a standard that would be very difficult to match or to beat. Impressive stuff to say the least.

The comprehensive package contains the following:
1. A wonderful collage of a lovely butterfly, showing this species from various POV’s that highlights the beautiful reflective iridescence. The amazing rainbow of colours would probably appear to move and change as the angle at which they are seen changes.
2. Very informative and analytical notes that contain excellent personal observations as well as interesting referenced material. To top that are the full specs of each individual photo complete with camera and technical information as well as post processing details.
3. A fabulous workshop to show the wonderful and breathtaking location of the shoot while this photo is good enough to have been presented as a stand-alone posting.

Outstanding work and TFS.
