First of all, please let me thank you for your friendly and positive responses to my previous presentation of

Lycaena dispar,

showing a male individual. Details on life and distribution of this endangered species may be seen there.

Now here it was another sunny day in Spring, and quite windy, too. Together with my daughter I was heading to the borders of a reservation of primordial deciduous forest in Vienna’s Lainzer Tiergarten nature park. Crossing a meadow, a lonely bright orange little butterfly caught our attention as it was quickly flying in ever changing directions, briefly taking seat in vegetation, and always taking off the moment I approached it. Usually I do not run after a butterfly, but this one made me do so. My daughter had a lot of fun watching me for at least ten minutes. Just before giving up, I finally got a close look and a quick shot of what I expected – a female of the Large Copper.

As stated before, with many Lycaenids sexes look different. At this species, the females' wings are spotted, and their colour is less brightly orange than the males'.

In the Vienna Woods and other well preserved natural forest border habitats of Lower Austria, I have been lucky to see Lycaena dispar repeatedly in the last few years, but always just single individuals in one place.

The location.

The camera: SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 18mm macro zoom (equivalent 110mm at full size SLR), F/3.5, 1/1000 sec., ISO-125, exposure bias: -1, hand held, no flash. 25.05.2007, 11:31, at bright sunshine and windy conditions.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, cropped, resized to web, resharpened, levels slighty adjusted.

Hi Peter,
Very nice POV. Excellent focus and details. Beautiful colours. Great composition, I'm short of time...

Hello Peter,

Nice composition. Excellent contrast with the surrounding and very good sharpness. Colours are natural.

Hello Peter,
This is an original POV and composition showing us this little one in a usual angle. The picture shows great details, beautiful colors and very good exposure. Your notes are also very interesting and thanks for this complementary picture in WS. Thanks,

Hi Peter,
Your gallery of butterflies are not only amazing but also growing every day!
This one is so clear in terms of the characteristics of the specia, besides the artistic quality of it.
Love the side lighting and the transparecnies it produces.
My compliments and thanks to post it.
Best regards,

Guten Tag Peter,

Hi, dear Peter.
I am amazed with your POV again. It is simply fantastic as well as the close distance and magnification ratio. You have managed with exposure parameters perfectly considering the wind weather. Despite the wind you managed to get extremely sharp image. Pictured scene is wonderful by own green colour palette, nice combination of the sharp and blurred leaves. I also like square cropping too. All is perfect. Bravo and my warm greetings.

Hi Peter,
Just marking this wonderful post from you for now and will come back later with a proper critique. Sorry tied up with an urgent assignment.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
Beautiful picture of the butterfly. The back-lighting is showing very nicely the delicate design of the wing.
What is that small bud in the bottom. You could have probably cropped it out.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Peter

It's nice to see the female of the species, too, not only the gorgeous male sometimes :)
I see you have found quite a nice and big population of this unfortunate species, that i've read doesn't do so well all across Europe.
Anyway, this is a great macro, with again impressive details on the wings, head and (one of the) antennae :)
The exposure settings here are once more very well balanced and mentain a good light on both sides of the wings of the butterfly.
Splendid colors and nice composition, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Peter, this caught eye my straight away. It has a wonderful pov and excellent light on the Butterfly. It is so nice to see both sides on the wing, the markings and colour are crisp and sharp. Perfect focus and dof. A truly excellent shot.
:) later.

Hello Peter,
Excellent plane of focus and the lights direction here works well. Sharp details and your POV shows both the inner and outer wings very well. Color is great, as is the blurred BG isolating the copper nicely in the frame.
Very well done.

Hello Peter,
I missed this fine macro of a female L. dispar. great POV, sharpness, lighting composition and details.
It is interesting to know that this ssp rutilus has a drier habitat than ssp dispar.
I hear that you are snowed under in your area. I hope you didn't get caught in the traffic chaos.
Thanks for sharing this one and have a nice weekend,
